JOHANNESBURG - Wits University has approved a policy that prohibits sexual and romantic relationships between staff members and students.

The university says the policy will combat the problem of gender based offences and sexual harassment and guard against the potential for abuse of power by lecturers.

The varsity says sometimes students feel they are unable to reject the sexual advances of lecturers.

Oh boy. More micro-management rules from the politically correct.

Dismayed to see my alma mater now has a Gender Director. How far it's fallen. And will continue to fall until this sort of crap is consigned to the dustbin.
 
Thought this was already a rule at most universities.
 
Sexual relationships between lecturers and students are banned the world over, why is WITS only introducing this policy now in 2016? (might as well round it up to 2017)

So none of these sexual "relationships" with lecturers were initiated by students trying to bribe one+ of their lecturers with sexual favours? Seems like a statistical anomaly worth investigating.

The marks dished out by lecturers in question should be investigated and disciplinary action should be taken against lecturers found to be giving students marks they don't deserve.
 
Lecturers and teachers should never dip their pen in their student's ink pot.
 
And where does this principle come from?

I can see a principle that a staff member ought not advantage or favour a student because of a personal relationship. That holds in any situation, not just educational ones.

But banning relationships? It's a category error. And smacks of moralistic fundamentalism even worse than the bizarre excesses of Calvin.

So why not just make a rule that ensures such a bias cannot exist / exists to a lesser degree?
 
Goodness, why does this rule need to exist? They should know this already, it has and always will be inappropriate for teacher-student relations regardless if there are any rules against it. Some of these people were still children six months ago. It is good that they now have a formal rule against it so that perps cannot feign ignorance anymore.

Wits has had this rule for years, not sure what's new.
 
But what if a 21yo female B.Com student wants to date a 30yo junior lecturer from the Genetics department?

He should be able to figure out a way of artificially inseminate here if he's any good at his qualification
