Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

Not good enough. We want free education. WHat's so difficult about making it happen? Force the rich to pay for it. Also what about those colonial remnants that we are seeing everywhere in SA? Jeezus, we are still stuck in the past.

Please NEVER study economics as with your "mindset" even your own budget must be a nightmare failure.

BTW MOST THINKING LIKE YOU ARE STUCK WITH COMMUNISM with an attitude of "Freeriding" Who must pay for this idiocy? Who are these rich you are talking about? All the rich fat cats like people like Patrice Motsepe, Cyril Ramaphosa, Sipho Nkosi, Mike Teke, Tokyo Sexwale, Saki Macozoma, Zuma ......... etc. ....should they pay or do you have others in mind?

Sickening. Threatening to burn fellow students. Clearly they are not ready for higher education.
Send them back to primary school  :wtf:

Wont work. Once brainwashed always a tool!

But... Do you really want to migrate back North?

They already are. Are you so deluded that you dont know this ?
The "rich" are already indirectly funding the financial assistance given to students in financial need. But now you want them to shoulder the burden completely, even though some of the so called "rich" you refer to can't really even afford to send their own children to university! Definitely not all 7 of them  GTFO with your nonsensical garbage, guy :wtf:

Middle Class will pay for these people. You'll see. Taxes will go up. But the thing is AthenianOwl will fsck over the poor and most of his graduates will still have no jobs and just have a lot of useless degrees.

Okay, lets say JZ announced all education is free from today. Now what? Where are these students going to study? Yes, ANC should have been planning infrastructure for this for the last 20 odd years instead of looting the money for themselves, but we are where we are. So, free education from today, the rich have had their accounts emptied. Now what? First come first served? Whats your plan? How are you going to squeeze say 500k people into Wits which has space for maybe 30-35k odd for example?

Wits alumni to assist students to study for exams

JOHANNESBURG – Wits University alumni say they will be on the university campus this weekend to help students prepare for their upcoming exams - set to begin in less than a week’s time.

The nationwide #FeesMust Fall campaign began with Wits students calling for an end to the 10.5 percent fee increase last week.

Students staged sit-ins and marches demanding that management concede to their demands.

Students have missed a week and a half of academic hours for the Fees Must Fall campaign.

But Wits alumni say they will be on campus from today to help students study and offer tutoring sessions.

Post graduate student Katleho Mokhosi says, “The extra lessons will carry on throughout the weekend and we meet today at 12 midday and we meet tomorrow Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon, and people have given times that they will be available.”

Meanwhile, the SRC will be meeting with university management in the next hour to discuss how best to move the academic program forward, including the exam timetable.

#FeesHaveFallen: Wits students meet behind closed doors

JOHANNESBURG - Wits University students are meeting privately this afternoon to discuss the events from the Union Buildings yesterday.

They were among those who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria demanding that high tertiary education fees be scrapped.

The nationwide Fees Must Fall campaign began at Wits a week and a half ago with students rejecting a 10,5 percent increase in fees for 2016.

The main campus is quite today after more than a week of protests from Wits students.

They are locked in talks behind closed doors as they debrief following yesterday chaos at the Union Buildings.

Some of the buses leaving the Union Buildings were targeted by angry protesters as they left the lawns during clashes with police.

Why? There are thousands of students who are capable of actually doing their degrees, they just need the financial resources.

And if it were free it would actually give many students something to shoot for. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of pupils who don't really bother that hard with their schoolwork because they know they don't have the option of doing anything after matric anyway.

Source? I believe if they academically supportive they would have done it. Not hey I deserve this so someone must give it

Wits to remain closed as students continue #FeesMustFall campaign

Mpho Raborife, News24

Johannesburg - The University of Witwatersrand will remain closed on Monday after students announced that they will be continuing with their protests against the institution, Vice Chancellor Adam Habib said on Saturday.

"The students have just concluded their mass meeting and we have been told that despite the decision taken at the historic meeting between government, students and university leaders yesterday [Friday] to agree to a zero percent increase for 2016, and to reorganise the academic and examination programme, our students have decided to continue with their protest," Habib said.

He expressed his disappointment at the students' decision, which would put students' chances of passing or graduating in jeopardy.

"This will only further entrench and deepen the inequalities in our society."

He said a special meeting would be held on Monday by the senate - the institution's highest decision-making body - to discuss the protest and the resumption of the academic programme.

"The outcome will be communicated to all students and staff thereafter."

Habib said one of the reasons students had decided to continue with the protests was because of the institution's out-sourcing of workers.

"This is a matter that the university is investigating and which it will deliberate upon at council. Government also agreed at yesterday’s meeting to establish a task team to explore how the state could assist universities to address this challenge."

Students nationwide had protested the proposed fee hikes for 2016 for more than a week.

Protests began at Wits University before spreading to campuses throughout the country.

Yesterday, President Jacob Zuma announced that university heads and students’ leaders had agreed on a zero percent fee increment for next year.

His announcement was met with mixed reactions from students. Some were happy that one of their demands had been met, some wanted to know when the government would implement a policy of free education for all.

Wits SRC incoming president Nompendulo Mkatshwa was not immediately available for comment.

here we go again...

It will be interesting when the exam period is in motion where unprepared students are likely to be in trouble. It will be chaos should protesters decide to disrupt students writing exams. When this happens the Rand will take another dive as it did during the week.

Ok. The movement may have just lost my support. I don't understand why the protest has to continue for things that can be addressed later. The major request was heeded and yes I agree that the "What happens in 2017" argument is valid but the exams are supposed to start on Tuesday for some people and a lot of people have unfinished syllabi. This is not on.

But the "best" thing to come out out of that meeting is that Wits kids now have to apologise to TUT.
The reason:
Because the protest was supposed to start at 10 and Wits students came at 11-12 with branded buses with us energy drinks and water. Because we sat far from the disaster that was happening within the gates. Because we ate during the time we sat there. Because people went to McDonald's when they were hungry. Because we got there and protested peacefully on their home ground and that didn't sit well with them. Because we wanted to leave after the announcement was made.

I call BS on all this nonsense. I don't see why we have to apologise to people who threw rocks at us. Who threatened to burn our buses (while we were inside). Who called us all sorts of names. But hey, leadership has apologised. NONSENSE MAN!!!
