Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

Would love to know where the hundreds of thousands of free graduates are going to work, too...

No need for work, with their free education they will have free degrees that will give you time to do free jobs for free. The Government will print some free money and everybody will be job free.

Or how the universities are going to cope with the influx of students.

I know the first year subjects @ Wits are already crazy packed - mainly due to the lowered requirements for university exemption.

Next we are going to have violent protests because there aren't enough places in our universities for all the prospective students.

/sigh

Very easy solution to that, increase the difficulty of the first round of tests.

Wits gets interdict for cops to protect lectures

JOHANNESBURG - Wits University says it secured an urgent High Court interdict last night which allows for police to come onto campus and make sure lectures are not disrupted.

The university says the past couple of days have been relatively peaceful and the court order is a preventative measure.

It stresses that students still have the right to protest, but that others have an equal right to study in peace.

The institution’s Shirona Patel says the court order was secured at the request of police.

Wits interdict shows Habib has lost control - EFF student

Lizeka Tandwa, News24

Johannesburg - Wits University vice-chancellor Adam Habib has lost control of his house, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student leader Vuyani Pambo said.

Pambo was reacting to the urgent high court interdict the university obtained on Thursday evening.

The interdict allows the police to step in if there are violent protests; if students and staff are intimidated or if classes are disrupted. However, Pambo said this was proof Habib was not the right man for the job, adding that this was a scare tactic and another provocation by university management aimed at protesting students.

"The burning of property is solely at the feet of the university, because they provoked protesting students when they brought in extra security and police," Pambo said.

Several fires were started at Wits University's Braamfontein campus overnight on Tuesday.

Pambo said he warned Habib and the Wits University council it was not wise to resume classes.

"We told them not to open the university gates until they address outsourcing of workers and reschedule the exam timetable to accommodate all the students," he said.

Wits University spokesperson Shirona Patel said there had been incidents of vandalism and intimidation by those who did not want the academic programme to continue.

"This is just to allow police to be able to come in and intervene, because police told us they cannot act against perpetrators without an interdict,” Patel told News24.

There are no words for these brainless idiots. They burn down the university but it's the universities fault? And Malema says stealing is ok if it is to survive. Why not just throw out all the laws and everyone just do what they want. Can we not ship off these EFF supporters somewhere where they can start their own country?

Indeed. This sort of logic is mind blowing.

Let me give it a try. [-]The holocaust is solely at the feet of the Jews, because they provoked Hitler by living in the country.[/-] (Maybe a little too exaggerated)

The power crisis is solely at the feet of the public, because they provoked Eskom by using electricity.

I'll say he doesn't condone it. The morning after the fire he was like "I don't want to see anything burning today. Not even a cigarette". But hey... he can't control everyone. He's lost control of his house as much as Habib has lost control of his.

I was referring to another article where he said stealing to survive should not be a crime. On the phone now so can't look for it.

Lol. I think we're talking about different people. You're talking about Khoza (Malema didn't make the stealing statement) and I'm talking about Pambo.

Oh, that is possible :) When I read stuff like that I get a bit upset and don't focus properly.

Wits relieved by agreement to insource workers

JOHANNESBURG – Wits University says it’s relieved by an agreement reached in principle, to insource workers.

Students and employees who protested last week gathered at the institution on Sunday to receive the outcome of this weekend's deliberations.

Last month, President Jacob Zuma announced a freeze on fee increases for next year.

This week, a commission will start working on feasible ways to do away with outsourcing.

The university says one proposed method includes taking in workers once their contracts with outsourced companies expire.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Tawana Kupe says workers and students are equally relieved.
