Hey all,

I want to set up a WLAN between 2PC's and Share 1 ADSL connection.
i havn't a cooking clue on how 2 set up the wireless link, or what equipment 2 use

GPS co-ordinates of the two sites are(according to www.easymap.co.za)
site 1 : 26°39'36.2" S, 28°0'6.5" E
site 2 : 26°38'44.6" S, 28°1'38.2" E

like i said it's roughly 3-5km apart at the most, I'll check 2nite if there's Line of Site(using a big a$$ m0f0 torch), there might be a water tower in the way

And would creating this Link be Legal?

I have a 200m link to a friend. Through walls, trees, houses, bricks. No problem.

Wifi signals can penetrate objects to a certain extent - especially over short ranges.

I wouldn't do that if i were you - give out such accurate coords i mean...
I just picked you out on Google Earth and lucky for you - you're in a low res area so i can't see if your house would be good for a scud missile experiment... :D
Just a warning - there are some nasty people lurking on the net...

lol thx ambo, had a look 2nite and no LOS only like 5-10 big trees inda way, is there a way of knowing if it'll work with out buying the equipment? i measured it's more in the region of 3.1Km.

@Ryder (or anyone else): What equipment (aerials, etc) do you use for your 200m link?

I use 1 x 14dbi Yagi on my side, and a 24dbi grid on the other side. The grid is extreme overkill for this, but it allows another user with a 24dbi grid to connect from 8kms away. The 200m link would have been fine with 2 x 12dbi yagis which are less than R300.

The access points are all Linksys WRT54G's running Freifunk/OLSR and all antennas are on poles on roof, with the routers in weatherproof enclosures.... running home made POE.

Hope this helps?
