Woolworths' farm-style pies

Go and try make a similar pie at home and accurately track your input costs. Come back and talk again.

Remember these pies are not the same as the regular pies… there is probably at least 150-200grams of free range steak in there. Very little sauce (compared to a regular Woolies pie, much much less than what you will get in a garage pie/king pie pie). The pastry is proper butter pastry.
Are you sure about 150gms of steak content? I used to buy Woolies spinach feta pies once in a while and I used to feel I was eating pastry more than spinach & feta. Now I think it costs R39 (or maybe more) so out of question.

Na. The two pies are not the same. Woolworths regular pies are already pretty good, but they are a lot more flakey, and have a lot less meat in the filling compared to the farm style pies. The fsrmstyle pies are on par with Houwhoek or similar farm stall pies. Basically solid meat filling.

They are also made with Woolworths signature butter puff pastry, not the cheaper seed oil/margerine based pastry. The taste cannot be compared.

I am a pretty good home cook, and make a mean pie. But I have worked out the cost, and a similar quality homemade pie already costs me about R40.00 in ingredients alone. That is before adding in overhead. Expecting Woolworths to sell you that sort of pie, freshly baked and warm, with the convenience of getting it at a premium retail location, while you are doing your daily groceries, for anything less than R65.00, would simply mean they are selling it at a loss.

Instead of being offended by what WW charge for a premium pie (while their really good “regular” pies still cost R36.99), you should rather be asking why a Engen garage pie made from “meat” of unknown origin, and the cheapest, flakiest pastry, and not freshly baked, but rather just reheated on site, at R45-R50?

Perhaps look at the ingredients, the pie crust of the "farm style pie" doesn't contain a single ounce of butter. Hate to break it to you. If you believe woolies is "quality" and only uses the best ingredients then I have news for you. You are being ripped off.

A great deal of their products come from the exact same factories as the products you would buy at any other supermarket.

They aren't all that they say they are......lol

fck me people are gullible

There is no ways a pie with proper meat and filling will cost less than R70.

However, these are all just glorified garage pies. You pay for fake eye lashes lady serving it to you when you could have done it yourself
No one beats Houw Hoek Farmstall pies. They are famous. Stuffed with meat. Can not get better!

They are R45 each.

price per unit will fall, especially if you sell enough of them.
Just guessing here but you would still not buy them?

So they should rush out and produce pies nobody asked for or wants to buy so they could make them cheaper but throw them away when they expire?

That's... not how this works. That's ANC logic right there.

people are super gullible and easy to mislead,
you can tell them the pie was made by angels and people would actually believe it,

what they might do is play the shrinkflation card, and make the regular pies smaller.
so if you want a decent pie, you have to pay more, a lot more.

or sell them frozen to people, sell then as a pack of 5 in a box from the freezer, when you want, you take one,
if your hungry now, you go to the hot food counter and grab a ready made one.

not difficult but as usual greed and profits above all else, just watch the normal pies will be the size of the snack pies soon.

Nope. You mean the normal pies are R69.99 and your crappy, lower grade bland petrol station pies with fancy crust are R36.99.
