Hi there,

I’m looking to purchase a monitor from Wootware, and I’ve heard many good things about them, but I noticed in their returns policy that they charge a 25% restocking fee on returned products that have been opened. I’m a bit concerned about this, as I’m not 100% sure the monitor would work well for me (I’d want to test the monitor to see if it’s suitable for me since I’m using a Mac), and if it turns out into be unsuitable, I don’t want to pay an extra R1900 just to return it…

Has anyone had experiences with this high “restocking fee” or any relevant returns experience in general with Wootware?

Thanks!

TBH Its fair, I dont want to pay full price for the monitor that you "tried". So to avoid this do research on whether it will work ask around etc. Not fair to "test drive it" at their cost.

Got to remember some store wont even take your item back if its been opened

The restocking fee is understandable and fair. They can't sell your opened product as new as it's effectively second hand or demo stock. So why should they foot the bill?

What is the monitor? I have a 27" 4K Dell that I use with my Macbook and it is brilliant.

Assume this doesn't apply to faulty items?

It’s a 27” 1440p 144hz Dell S2721DGFA. I’m mainly concerned about the contrast / black levels, as I’ve read that aspect can be pretty sub-par on this monitor, but many people say it’s been fine for them.

Evetech seems to charge a 20% restocking/handling fee, and if you buy from Dell directly, potentially 15% or nothing. The monitor is a fee hundred Rand more expensive in those two places though, but the savings on the potential restocking fee might balance it out, especially if buying from Dell.

They will indeed charge you up to 25% based on the condition of packaging etc. , their discretion.

It’s a great monitor for gamers but if you are looking at it next to a retina macbook display you are very much going to notice the lack of contrast. It’s the fantastic performance in other areas that makes up for it.

This is why I miss brick and mortar stores like PC Game and Computer world. Could always go there with my dad to demo stuff. And then buy online anyway , lol.

So are you saying they could accept a return without the fee if the packaging is in its original condition, but opened?

Lol I can plug any monitor in my $35 raspberry pi. Why would you need to test a monitor on a Mac?
Good luck with that, quite a few USB-C monitors have issues. You need to read tons of reviews before buying something.

i.e. working properly at all, wake from sleep issues etc, unable to get the right refresh rates.

Its not a mac issue, Dell, etc all have similar issues. Problem is that usb-c is too new imho, and they haven't gotten all the bugs out.

Then theres the fun of which flavour of usb-c you have - usb/tb3 or tb4...

No, their minimum restocking fee is 10%
I just received an email back from a query I sent them on Friday, and they said:

“If you return the product to us within the 7-Day period and the packaging is still pristine then the fee is well below this, usually around 5-10%.”

Interesting, did you mention you were going to open and test it? Maybe they like you more.

By law they can’t charge anything if you haven’t opened it (within 7 days), so perhaps.

My Dell was covered in protective wrap and the cables in sealed plastic bags that would need to be torn open, so I would suggest you have spare cables handy if you decide to go for it.

If you wants contrast you're going to need to buy a va panel or oled panel monitor. That dell uses an ips panel.

Well that's one reason why they don't exist, they closed down because you don't buy anything from them.

What does the CPA say about a restocking fee?

Company policy doesnt override law.
They are well within their rights according to Clause 20, sub-section 6 if the packaging is opened, they may also charge a restoration fee in clause C.
