Guys that use Wordpress, do you purchase premium themes?
Or do you make one from scratch, or customise free ones?

The big advantage I see from a premium theme is support.

I'm a CSS noob so I use chrome to check what to edit and then just make changes, but I couldn't make it from scratch as I need the basic elements; sometimes, however, there is stuff I can't figure out and a support channel for the theme would be an added benefit.

The real advantage with premium Wordpress themes are that they are fully developed, or that development on them are continuous. They are better looking and have a lot more functions and features than free themes. Yes, in many instances you get free support, but in some instances you are charged for it. If you need further development you will definitely be charged, but simple quick questions are often free.

If you buy from places like Themeforest, you will often find support free and development to be ongoing in terms of releasing new and better versions totally free. So, it will also depend on where you buy them from and what the terms and conditions are.

I use the Genesis framework and their themes. It just saves so much time and Genesis is so well optimised and easy to use that I just can't see myself going with anything else.

These look awesome; but the themes I like are going for $99.95, which is quite a bit!

Themeforest starts at like $35 or so, but I suppose you get what you pay for.

Pirate the damn thing?

That wouldn't be very honest. Also wouldn't it enable hackers to get into your website, make it insecure?

At the moment I just have the default Twenty Thirteen theme.

Hey Pooky,

they do seem expensive but it's as you said "you get what you pay for" and if you think you could complete a theme in under 4 hours then yeah, $99 is a bit much.. (4 hours x R250 an hour = R1000 ($99))

If buying the theme is going to save you 2 to 3 days of work, then it's a very cheap price to pay...

Unfortunately they are quite expensive. However once you buy Genesis itself or one of the themes that include Genesis then you buy themes excluding Genesis. For instance the News Pro Theme costs $33.71 as a returning customer where it normally costs $99.95 if you are brand new and then it includes Genesis and the theme.

So you only need to buy the framework once and then the themes afterwards aren't that expensive.

How simple is it to customise only the framework? Those magazine/news themes they have look soooo nice.

Sorry Pooky, I don't really know how difficult it is. If you are familiar with css then I can't think that it will be too difficult. Genesis itself comes with a simple example theme that you can use to build on.
