Hi all!

Ok, so I need some help. I am currently studying for a degree in computer science (Focusing C#). I need to know who I can contact at Microsoft SA (preferably a email address) to ask them about careers in Cape Town for when I am done with my studies.

Then I would also appreciate any information regarding Google offices in Cape Town? Anyone no anything about it?

Any help will be much appreciated!

1. Microsoft and Google don't do much programming here in South Africa (as far as I am aware). You can try Amazon in Cape Town
2. The chances of you passing their interviews straight after your studies with no work experience (I am guessing here) is probably null (unless they have a student program)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the above is impossible, just very unlikely.

What you are most likely going to end up doing is send your CV to a recruitment company which line up interviews for you at companies you probably never heard of. You are going to work there for two years or so gaining experience and then change jobs again.

Try making your own programs and publish them online, then people will see and contact you. :)

So long you do / make good programs - you never need to look for a job, they'll look for you! :)

Having worked with MS in SA extensively in the past I honestly don't know why you would want to go work for them.

There are a couple of massive dev houses in South Africa where the work environments are awesome and you work on much, MUCH more interesting projects than the ones MS would take on.

I haven't worked with Google yet, but as far as I know Hamster is right, if you want to do technical work for Google then you'll have to head overseas.

The battery of tests you need to go through working for Google is a nightmare, and they contact you, not you them. Also c# is not their language of choice.

As for Microsoft they used local requirement agencies. My step-brother got a job for telephonic support with Microsoft via I think it was ?Kelly? back then, but this was before they moved the call center to Ireland. Thanx to his British passport he moved with. I dont think there is much of a Technical side left in SA.

Best is start small at normal firms, and work your way up.

MS and Google in SA are just sales and support offices. There is no real development done here.
Amazon do development here, but you have no chance if you are still busy with your degree.

There are many other Dev houses in SA though

While studying it would be a good idea to contribute to opensource projects, something to put on your CV. The nice thing is you get to decide which projects you want to work on. If it's a well known project then it could only be a good thing.

How would I go about doing this?
