Work / Gaming / Editing Laptop

Hey Peeps

What do you think of the follow laptops... It will be my work / gaming / editing photos & videos laptop.

Reasonable, but a little big for my taste. Not as portable.

My pick of the litter right now ( I'd know, I have one! )

Build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but is by no means flimsy.

Too big for me again. Also remember that anything that has a 3D screen does not have Nvidia Optimus, so it will always be running on the Nvidia GPU, which reduced battery life.

Best build quality of the lit IMO, classy.

My second choice, if the Lenovo is a bit too pricy. It'll also suffer a bit more with battery life though.

End of the day, all of them will get the job done, the main difference is the design, and the Lenovo has a nice 32GB SSD Cache to give you that little bit of extra performance ( Took mine out though and replaced it with a proper full-size SSD )

wow thanks for giving your view on each of the laptop.

Only noticed now that these are imports so it might take a while for them to deliver...

Does anyone know of a local availability of these laptops and at similar prices...

what about this one?

The more I have been reading around the web, the more opinions on Dell is that they are terrible laptops? I don't understand why? If it has 3 years on-site warranty and a problem arises then it gets sorted out no cost right?

I remember when I brought my Acer 5920G back in 2005 it was a beast but everyone was saying how crappy acer build and support are. But I am still using it today, granted I have to do the oven trip on the GPU recently to keep it going but still its alive and kicking.

So I guess my point is, do I listen to those opinions that a certain brand is crappy or do I get one and make my own mind up? And what is a clevo build?

I'd be very careful with buying from BrilliantTech. First see if you can find solid reviews/feedback from people here, where they're 100% sure that they didn't get a refurbished/stolen item!

Afraid that I can't help sourcing, I had to get mine in Singapore..

The Y500 is a worthy successor to the Y580, but it's also sitting without optimus ( though you can get a second GT650 to SLI )

You'll regret not getting a FHD panel though, it really makes this thing an amazing workhorse.

ok. So it looks like lenovo is out as the Y500 doesnt come in a full hd model in South Africa and I have phoned Lenovo and asked concerning international warranty if I import one from the States and they said that it will not be covered by any warranty if the laptop is sent to South Africa. And when I pointed out that Asus offers a 2 or even 3 year GLOBAL warranty, and that I wanted to buy a Lenovo product but due to their lack of international warranty I will have to go Asus.

The agent on the phoned basically didnt even try rescue a sale or a potential client. Oh well. It is a pity that its not available here in the FHD model, the ultrabay is amazing and the red light keys would have be great.

So on to Asus

what about this one?
