- Cindy PrellerHUNDREDS of workers downed tools yesterday at the largest construction site at Coega to date. The R3.5-billion Dedisa Peaking Power plant, a 335MW open-cycle gas turbine power plant in the Coega industrial development zone, is being constructed by Group Five, which employs more than 1 100 people on site.
Only days after returning to work on Monday, about 700 workers, affiliated to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, started with what they called a peaceful strike over labour grievances.
Although Group Five human resources senior manager Waylon van Wyk did not want to comment on the matter yesterday, in a letter given to employees he said the strike was unlawful and that a policy of no work, no pay would apply.
The letter stated that if employees did not return to work by midday, they could face disciplinary action and even dismissal.
