THREE WORKERS KILLED AMID S.AFRICA PLATINUM BELT STRIKE: UNION

Three workers were hacked to death on Monday in South Africa's restive platinum belt where a strike action is in its fourth month, a union said.

Two of the workers were killed while on their way to work, while the third was attacked at his home along with his wife, who also died, National Union of Mineworkers spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu, told AFP.

This needs to be stopped, and stopped forcefully now.

AMCU needs to be disbanded as well as far as I'm concerned.

Now with the election in the back, let's see how government deals with AMCU. AMCU have been alleging that the minister of labour wanted to deregister them prior to the election but feared them forming a political party. For their part AMCU have threatened all out anarchy if deregistered.

Time to bring out the army.

That would require declaring a state of emergency and imposing a curfew in the area where the miners live. Not sure how well that'll work, the strikers know who is going to work and who is not and all they need do is sneak into your home and kill you.

Ok now this is where education comes in. You don't brutally murder someone who does not want to strike with you FFS!!

You wanna give such a barbaric individual R12500 a month? Rather force feed him with a teaspoon full of cyanide.

Sickening and disgusting. Those who want to work in order to keep their families alive is pulling the short one as usual

Given the fact that I'm pretty sure AMCU are using intimidation and violence to keep this strike going, I doubt it would be much of stretch to be able to deregister them and to do so legally. Our police force just need to do their damn job and get the evidence of it.

It won't work unfortunately, it will end up with large amounts of bloodshed :(

THREE WORKERS KILLED AS S.AFRICA PLATINUM BELT BOILS OVER

Three mine workers were killed in South Africa's restive platinum belt, a union said Monday, as efforts intensified to break a strike that is now in its fourth month.

The National Union of Mineworkers members were killed while on their way to work, or attacked at their homes, NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu said.

Police said one was hacked to death, a second one was burnt to ashes in his house, while a third was found strangled to death along with his wife in their shack.

Six others were stabbed while walking to work, but survived.

The attacks appeared to bear the hallmarks of inter-union violence, but police could not confirm the motive.

Around 80,000 members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union downed tools on January 23 demanding higher pay, dramatically cutting production in the world's largest platinum producing region.

Non-striking workers, including members of the National Union of Mineworkers have reported intimidation and violence by the striking majority.

"We know those who are on strike are behind the attacks," NUM general secretary Frans Baleni told AFP. "Our members are between a rock and a hard place."

The most recent attacks come as platinum companies step up their efforts to break the strike.

Lonmin, the world's number three platinum producer said it was expecting a huge turnout of workers at the shafts this week after by-passing AMCU leadership and directly appealing to hard-up workers to return.

With many having to borrow from friends, family, or predatory lenders to make ends meet, Lonmin's call is likely to raise tensions.

"These people were planning the violent reaction. We know that yesterday they marched to the bus companies threatening to burn any buses that would transport workers," said Baleni.

AMCU bosses have rejected a basic salary package of 12,500 rand ($1,200/ 860 euros) by July 2017, saying they want that figure to take effect immediately.

So a bit like they do in Orwell's 1984. Re-educate and then kill? Nice doublethink there.

So how did they call out the army in Alex last week?

And Fat boy keeps encouraging them to keep striking.

Malema: Let them eat cake.

Time to arrest the union leaders and lock them up for murder, screw due process in this case.

And the rest of the workers... fire those who don't go back to work and seek out the ones the physically committed the act and arrest and prosecute them.

Ah. But you do brutally assault and murder if these are the "orders" from the rank. AMCU are nothing but terrible and should be harshly dealt with. No amount of education will change their way of striking.

THREE MINERS KILLED, SIX WOUNDED

Three miners have been killed and six others stabbed on their way to work in the Rustenburg platinum belt, North West police said on Monday.

On Monday, a 60-year-old mineworker was found dead with multiple stab wounds in Bapong, police spokesman Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said.

"On Sunday, in Bapong village, a couple was found strangled to death, the wife was stripped naked, the husband was a mineworker... the couple ran an illegal shebeen," said Ngubane.

Another miner was burned to ashes in the Big House informal settlement in Bapong.

Ngubane said six miners were stabbed while they were on their way to work on Monday.

Members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) at Impala Platinum, Lonmin, and Anglo American Platinum have been on strike since January 23 demanding a basic salary of R12,500 a month.

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) regional secretary Sydwell Dolokwana blamed Amcu members for the three deaths.

"We blame Amcu for the deaths because [they] intimidated our members who wanted to go to work on Monday," said Dolokwana.

He said the employer was also to blame.

"Our employer urged workers to report for duty on Monday and they could not even ensure the safety of the workers."
