We use the Dell line of workstations at the office for running numerical models. Our current pc's features the following:
x2 Intel Xeon 4214 Cpu 2.2GHz, 12 cores
64 GB ECC RAM
Nvidia Quadro P2200

We are looking at building vs buying from a supplier like Dell. Where would I even begin to find a suitable replacement CPU? I was thinking of looking at the Threadripper lineup, but availability seems to be the issue locally. Am I just better of using the Dell dual cpu type workstations?

Can't wait, unfortunately. I might buy a second one next year so hopefully we can source that if not too expensive.

It is also for the company so ebay not an option.

The HEDT market is basically dead in the water at the moment so you're basically stuck with the type of systems you currently have.

A 5950X will stomp those Xeon's but no ECC.

As far as I understand it the 5950x will support ecc ram if the mbb does. It’s a beast cpu with 16 cores and very high clock speeds relatively speaking.

Do you get AMD motherboards with dual cpu support? Our current setup has two cpu's installed so access to 24 cores and our numerical models benefit more from higher number of cores than just clock speeds.

Are there any companies in South Africa that specializes in these types of workstations?

Baord is cheap and they support up 3990x which has 64 cores/128 threads

Ryzen 3rd gen is getting a bit old now and TRX40 is a dead platform moving forward.

Why I suggested waiting for the 7th gen Threadripper.

From what I have seen the projected prices for the 7th gen Threadripper are going to be astronomical.
Ryzen 3rd gen is amazing value, considering what the op is currently using it'll be a massive upgrade.
