Professor John Ellis of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) is one of the world’s most eminent theorists and science experts and is known as a dynamic communicator. As a cutting-edge physicist, he and a large group of international scientists have won an extensive following among the most highly respected and influential sages across the globe when they recently launched an atom-smashing machine near Geneva, Switzerland, which aims to simulate the conditions that are believed to have existed micro-seconds after the “Big Bang” that created the universe.
“The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), dubbed the Big Bang Discovery Machine, is the largest experiment on earth, ever. The scientific research instrument includes a circular tunnel 27km in circumference and is buried 100m underground in the suburbs of Geneva and neigbouring France. It is expected to generate tons of data through subatomic collisions,” says Prof Simon Connell of the Physics Department, Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), who has performed experiments at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, since 1994. He is currently the leader of the South African group’s participation in the ATLAS experiment of the LHC.
Prof Ellis will be presenting a free public lecture on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and High Energy Physics that could revamp modern physics and unlock secrets about the universe and its origins. The lecture is scheduled for 18:30 – 19:30 on Wednesday, 17 December 2008 at Scibono, Miriam Makeba steet, Newtown, Johannesburg.
Prof Ellis explained that the LHC would be telling us something really basic about the way in which the universe is constructed. “According to some theories gravity, which is normally extremely weak for an individual elementary particle, might become quite strong when you bang together the energetic particles that we’ll be using at the LHC. If that idea is correct, then it’s possible that in some of these collisions of protons you’re going to produce a Black Hole. Now this is going to be an incredibly small microscopic Black Hole, and the amount of energy that it has is in human terms absolutely infinitesimal, so these aren’t going to present any danger to us. In fact, these things break apart extremely quickly and they release energy in much the same way as other collisions of protons at the LHC. There’s no danger from them. The total amount of energy which is released is incredibly small. But nevertheless these will be fantastic laboratories. We can study gravity in the laboratory in a way that’s never been possible before. Finding extra dimensions would be much more exciting than finding dark matter. “
