OOOOOOHHHH!!!!

Seven (7) more days 'till the end of the world!!!! - NOT!

Large Hadron Collider - switch on takes place @ 10 September 2008 where the first injection of proton beams will take place - AWESOME.

Can't wait. The questions that will be answered are super cool.

Very interesting stuff...

:D

I heard that time will slow down in there!
To such an extent that for every 24 hours passing outside the LHC only 6 seconds would have passed inside it. How does that work? Isnt time a man made concept?

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the world will only end after 21 October :D

Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out on 8-11 August, 2008, the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for 10 September 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.

Can't wait though

So would it be possible for me to life inside of this loophole where I will only age 6 seconds for every 20 years? Ofcourse some of you will have to join me otherwise it might be lonely...

I was expecting GLOBAL WARMING to kill us. So I've been praising the Goracle and generously donating for nothing

They're stealing your thunder. I hear there's a lot of acrimony among doomsayers :D

This wouldn't be the first time scientists have risked our planet. When they detonated the first H bomb some thought it might ignite the atmosphere.

So the particles are gonna be moving at 99.99% the speed of light.

WTF do they generate that with?

They're taking itsy bitsy little atomic particles, flinging them around a kilometers-long underground tunnel, and seeing what happens when they collide (in October).

hmmm... the only reason why they say time will slow down, is because shyte will move so fast that it look slow. (like when you have a camera recording @1000 fps, and then you play it at 30fps, it looks super slow)

but i believe that time is a conspiracy just to keep us working and make us buy presents

They are only starting up the beams on Wednesday, the first date for collisions has not been finalised as of yet. Its still going to be very much a testing period while everything is checked up (Magnets need to be calibrated, beam precision, etc) ... The beam will start up at around 450 GeV, and will have to be ramped up over the next few weeks to 5 TeV at which the collisions will actually take place

Basically.. you still have a few more days left (unofficially.. its looking like 2 months from first beam)

PS: dont forget as well as per this post http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=130537 . You can watch the event live here. http://webcast.cern.ch/
They are already broadcasting some things now as they get ready for startup
