I tried to follow came 9 live, but I just realized my chess is just too rusty and much of the commentary and analysis is just beyond me.

I've been following all the games live. But yeah, chess at that level is just something else.

Chess.com has over 100 million members and about 11 million daily active users. The site hosts more than 10 million games per day. Then there's also Lichess. And OTB (over the board) chess is also very popular.

Personally I've been pretty much obsessed the last couple of years.
 
Can someone please explain this move?
If white horse moved there to make check with black king then why cant black castle simply not take the white horse out?
Does king always have to make a move when in check?

Yes the blacks rook could just take out whites knight. And the king does not always need to move you do however need to do all you can to get out of check.

Seems like a modest guy. Commentators said he worked hard for the win.

P.S. Do you think there was anything Ding could have done to avoid the loss, heard them saying he made a mistake but I don't know much about chess.

Unfortunately Ding threw that game away. It was a dead draw but he made a one move blunder that cost him the game. It was more a case of Ding losing the game than Gukesh winning it.

If they made it to the playoffs it would have been interesting because apparently Ding is better at faster time controls.

However during the entire match I think Gukesh played the better chess and he deservedly won the title.

Black can take with the castle (rook) but it won't stop the checkmate.

So Rxe7, Rd8+ Kxe8, Rb8#

What I meant is white horse moved from D5 to E7 and put black king in check.
Now Black Castle can take out white horse from F7 to E7, now no more Check.
Is that right?

That's correct. I gave you the continuation. So even if black takes the knight, checkmate is inevitable.
