Worldwide Console Sales

Assuming they don't get their figures from Sony HQ that's pretty impressive! :D

vg charts take their numbers from stock SOLD through shops so I would say the stats are pretty accurate.

I am not sure about their DS stats though? Everyone has always said that the DS was killing the PSP?... I see after I follwed the link that the DS does kill the PSP in Japan...

I don't know, I find those stats dodgy. In January Microsoft claimed to have sold over 10.4 million units.
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=93188
That was 3 months ago, with their projected sales to be around 12-13 million units by now.

The site also shows no references, whereas something like the NPD figures do, kind of like quoting http://nexgenwars.com/.

I also found a site a week or to ago (will try find it again) that had the official Japan sales figures for every week since launch at those added up to slightly over 400k 360's.

So I'll take these with a pinch of salt, but someone's welcome to prove otherwise.

lol... i don't know so far, maybe this site tracks the number of consoles actually sold, and Mircosoft might be claiming the number of consoles sold to the stores or that have come out the factory, but ya... i think that the ps3 is slowly creeping up and have it's apple on the tree... the only thing that might help the ps3 sell **** loads of ps3's is if say the hdtv hits off and starts to make large sales thus more people will want ps3

Indeed, no use counting units that's been sold to retailers. I think these figures are reasonably accurate when looking at consoles sold to customers.

I am not sure why a huge leap in sales of HDTV's would help the PS3? The Xbox 360 can do HD gaming as well and most people would just buy a stand alone HD DVD or Blu-Ray player?

Am I missing something?

well... yes i guess. the ps3 has been marketed as a hd tool... while the xbox360 is mainly just a next gen game station. the reason why stand alone players still will come second to the ps3 is because the people who can buy the hd tv's and blu-ray players are old enough to have children (between 10 and 18) which means these children will want to play games and the parents will want rather having 1 system to do it all. its simple

I don't buy into that. If a person has enough money to buy a HD TV (R10 000 min) and a Blu-Ray player (R3000 by the end of the year max) then it would seem to be more logical to then buy the kids a gaming station to use on their own TV which I am sure they have if the parents are spending R15 000 on a new setup.

Like the old TV that was just replaced.

I can imagine some people will buy a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player but once xmas comes around and we have more affordable Blu-Ray players which actually complies with the official Blu-Ray standards I don't see it being a great seller for the PS3...

but I have been proven wrong before so lets see.

But people buy into new technology for that reason, it's new. I know a handful of people who bought plasma screens when they were going for over 60 grand. They didn't support anything and most of them don't work anymore but to them, having that technology was the most important thing.

Technology always gets cheaper, but its standard practice for the manufacturers to milk as much out of the consumer at the beginning of it's trend.

Yes you are. The average guy on the street don't know about the 360. And if I remember correctly, the PS3 is cheaper than a standalone Bluray player at the moment?

Currently yes but I was talking about when HDTV starts to really take off which will most probably be this coming xmas. There are a lot of rumours on the web about Blu-Ray players costing $300 by xmas as well so the PS3 loses it's benefit then.

And they dropping PSP sales for the first time since inception, gonna sell more!

And once against strangely not for Europeans? The price drop only applies in the States... Sony does seem to have something against the Europeans doesn't it.

Exactly Retro. The "average man in the street" doesn't know d!ck about Blu-ray either, nor does he have an HD-TV, nor would they ever pay R6300 for a "DVD player".

But what the average Joe on the street knows is all about Sony. Marketing at its best. :p
