Worst South African tech predictions

I could write a whole article on the technologies we supported whilst I did data strategy for MTN. I can think about six - top of mind and those whose demise we predicted at least 10 years ago.

Mind you, some did happen - just took a lot longer, some went through the dip in the hype curve and recovered. Some are not quite seeing the light of day yet (but may still). Some we were writing the obituary for are still ticking.

It takes time to learn what to look for and I'm pleased I didn't have to make public statements.
 
One thing I know I am utterly, mostly 99% sure on, is that we will have 10 meg lines + 1 terrabyte cap, minus the need for a separate voice line, and all at the price of less than R300 per month... Before the year 3000.

I should be spot on about this right?

No. Inflation will mean R300 is worth the equivalent of a few cents by then.
 
That CellC guy's lack of vision is the reason why the CellC's network is crap then

the Hamilton Airship also deserves a mention

Sat through several meetings with Hamilton. He was very passionate about the project but unfortunately it lacked technical feasibility. With that it was inevitable that the project would fail sooner or later. Pity about what happened to him later, he was a likable person.
 
Very insightful article. It should deter others from being prophets of doom.
 
LTE is technically 4g but still falls under the 3g banner due to it being a progression of edge and hdpsa or singeing silly like that

I would leave airships under the category of 'possible future' as the volume of transported goods increases, efficiency becomes a critical issue and technology improves. If they do 'take off' (excuse the pun) it would be even more of a tragedy that Hamilton was ahead of his time.

It was designed by the standards body as a 3G tech. The marketing people in the US started labelling it as 4G. The real 4G tech is LTE-Advanced.
