A would-be hijacker has been killed and another critically wounded in a shootout in Midrand, north of Joburg.

The two gunmen had tried to hijack a motorist on Old Pretoria Road earlier today when a bystander intervened.

The police's Eugene Opperman says a shootout then ensued.

Opperman says the man who shot the duo was acting in self-defence and opened fire only after being shot at.
