Hi,

I am thinking of using a web hosting company or ISP in South Africa, make a website on it as well as a proxy server to access websites (when your cap has run out).

Would ISP's or web hosting company shut me down for running such a service on my website??

You mean a proxy for your own personal use? I cant see why not, you'll be paying for the bandwidth anyway. Although it would be considerably cheaper to top up for R29 for 2 gigs than to use your hosting BW to surf on.
That and when you run out of BW on your site it means no one can access the site either.
 
You'll probably be shut down very quickly. I don't know of any local hosts who allow proxy scripts. I know that many (many!) years ago when I hosted my very first website with Hetzner, in the days of very small caps, I also thought of using a proxy to surf once I reached my cap.

It worked very well, but Hetzner found the script within a few hours and deleted it. And told me not to do that again :)

Won't the situation change if you have a dedi? Might not be the cheapest solution but if you have 100 okes paying R10 a month the option becomes a possibility....
 
Agreed, you need to check the terms and conditions of every host.

I think the majority of all hosts around the world will prohibit proxies on shared hosting accounts. Some also prohibit them on shared or dedicated hosting accounts.
 
Have a proxy script on my site, don't use it much. (Not local) but just read the terms, it usually says there if bandwidth abuse is allowed or not.
 
What ever happened to that oke that handed out that free proxy a couple of years back?

He scammed a few hosting companies out of thousands of Rands, I cannot remember how much but way over R100k, in bandwidth cost.

I remember there was a case against the guy but cannot remember if they ever caught the guy (fake ID's and accounts).

On topic:
When you look at your hosting option you will see that you have limited bandwidth you can use each month, and it is far, far cheaper to just buy additional bandwidth for you ADSL account than running through a proxy a racking up a bill with them.
 
I saw Mweb offers unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space and a 50mb db, and a free .co.za, if this had to use lets say 100GB of Bandwidth, they cant sue me because their product offered unlimited bandwidth?

I guess the only way to know is if I ask the web hosting company before i sign up

Their policy explicitly prohibits running proxies or file sharing from shared hosting

You appear to be very ademant in launching your own proxy site. Well, i went around and can confirm that no South African hosting company will allow proxy sites on shared or resell hosting packages.

Here is my solution: shop around for dedicated servers.

In SA you won't get a lot of bandwidth, but you are free to use the bandwidth on a proxy site. Again, be sure to read the hosting company's terms and conditions. Some do not allow proxies, not even on dedicated servers.

Here's a word of advice though: i owned a proxy site some years ago, and had an offshore dedicated server with 5TB of bandwidth per month. After just about 3 months I generated tremendous amounts of traffic and I exceeded my bandwidth limit within the first week of the month. Luckilly my site was shut down each time I reached my limits and eventually closed it down as I could not have generated enough income to keep the site alive.

This is a huge site to run, even though very little work is required, but you will require a hell of a lot of money to keep it going.

If you dont have money, get out of the game before you get burned.
