Would you go to war?

I lol at all the jokers that say they will pack up and leave the country , Its so easy to just assume you will pack up and leave but in reality its not as simple as that , it can take years to gain legal entry into another country for immigration , not to mention the high cost. even if you have dual citizenship in another country can you afford to just leave everything here , pack up and go ? , where will you stay? , will you have enough money to survive a few months without work? etc etc.

If there is a war you best believe you will be a part of it in one way or another and you will have to fight for evreything you have.

People want to start killing each other. Go ahead. I'm gone.

I think this debate is only relevant if there is actually a threat of war. Why not a discussion over whether you'd fight the Taliban for British Forces. Or whether you'd defect to North Korea and sell our military secrets. There are no credible internal threats in SA, except the Valies taking over our beaches once a year (and it's more of a spectacle than a nuisance). Anybody else we would simply bomb the poop from their tracts and they'd keel over before their non-existent country enters the stone age. In the case of world events drawing lines of allegiance could make this more interesting. But then it's more a case of do you join the yanks or the ruskie's, and not whether you'd emigrate to Australia and park off under a cooliba.

To make it more interesting:

Would you fight for the Westernization and E.U. membership of Ukraine or would you fight for the majority desire (as I have it) for it to be affiliated with Russia (or take a neutral stance perhaps).

The Russians are masters of warfare, as well psychological and propagandic warfare. So as a soldier I'd choose their army over any European hodgepodge (plus the West are more lenient to POW's). If I was commanding a division, I'd go with the opposite because they are fascinating opponents. No matter what Uncle Ron or even Winnie Mandela will tell you, the SA govt were fighting Angolan communists in the border war, not the ANC. That war only ended with the dissolution of the USSR.

The problem with the Russians is that they fight for pride. Separatists getting snarky in South Ossetia? Colonise. Ukraine threatening to become a cozy little lovenest for the Obama's? Shoot down a passenger jet. Everything they do is propagandic fear-mongering along the lines of, "Oh you don't speak Russian, but do you speak blood and guts?" The problem with the Americans is that they fight for money. Junior's v8's chugging too heavy at the pumps? Let's invade Iraq for no apparent reason. Afghanistan's fubar and the camping fees are to high? GTFO. They paint broad strokes while the Russians finesse every detail. So if you're gonna fight a war, check that you'll survive first, and secondly that you'll have fun.

Thanks for views, I was never in the army so I'm stuck with romantic principles of right and wrong, patriotism etc. rather than choosing the 'pragmatic' side.

My view on war is avoid it at all costs. I will not fight for anyone but my family. If there is a way to take my family away from the war-torn country, I would do that before joining the military.
If there was absolutely no way to get out and I had to fight, I would find a way to avoid joining the military and stay at/near home fighting for my family.

There is literally no amount of Patriotism or sense of "protect my fellow man" that would pull me away from protecting my family.
There is also no real way that you can convince me that going to fight against a foreign country, on behalf of my home country, away from my family; is the best way for me to protect my family. It might be dressed up in my family's best interest, but it is actually in my nation's best interest; and almost exclusively, my own and my nation's best interests do not align.
