Got Ubuntu installed, works like dream! Everything works from startup!!!

Only problem is, the fonts look a bit funny, how do I make them look normal?

How do you define normal?

In any event I suspect what you want involves sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts.

Yeah well I said I'd kill for 8.10. not the Alpha (they kinda unstable and that sort of stuff, strange things happen...) :D

I'll stick to Hardy for now thanks....

I've done that, now what do I do?
Hi Pooky,

What are you trying to achieve with the fonts? Ubuntu comes with default system wide fonts called Sans and looks different from MS Windows XP or Vista as MS font rendering is not the same as in Linux.

Here is what I do to make the fonts really look good on my laptop hardware:
HP 15.4" 1920x1200 res ATI Fglx V5000 default dpi is 96 (but this makes the fonts really ugly and small). So what I do is set the dpi to 120 under System>Appearance>Fonts>Preferences>Details; in here set the
smoothing to subpixel LCD, Hinting to slight, and subpixel order to RGB. Fonts to Sans at points throughout; monospace to 9 as well.

The fonts really pick up and stand out. Also very easy on the eyes.
MS XP does not have anti-alising on by default but could be turned on for LCDs using "clear-type". Personally, I feel the fonts in Ubuntu with the setting I have just described work well for me. I used to install the msttcorefonts, and chnage to arial without anti-alising on, to resemble XP, but soon discovered that it was painful on the eyes at small font sizes.

S
