I just bought world of warcraft and the 1st add-on "the burning crusade".

the question is where to start? should i only install WoW and do some quests 1st and "finish" the main story (if there is one) and then install the burning crusade...

or should i install everything and just startwith the BC?

install everything, get wrath of the lich king as soon as possible too....

if you install both expansions you still play thru the entire game and start at the same starting levels etc. just the extra expansion content will be available to you immediately.. including professions etc etc

Don't need WoTLK cos it's wortless for you still no matter how you look at it. It's nice to have for the extra profession but that is it. You only need WoTLK once you have at least hit 60.

And yes, as mentioned above install WoW+TBC in one go then choose a char and play :)

If you can, try to get a friend (or anyone) to give you the updates/patches on a DVD instead of having to download them yourself. You'll save yourself a few gigs worth of downloading and you'll be able to start playing sooner too ;)

Well in short:
WoW Vanilla : lvl 1 - 60
Burning Crusade : lvl 60 - 70
WOTLK : lvl 70 -80.

So as you can see, you won't actually be able to play BC/WOTLK until you reach those levels. However your client STILL needs to be patched to match the server [which is WOTLK-version]....the expansions usually "upgrade" your client [it's one gigantic patch] which saves you from downloading it all.

So while you won't be able to access the content immediately, it will save you a crapload of bandwidth ...in fact i wager it's cheaper to buy WOTLK+BC and installing them from the discs, than downloading the patches from scratch ;) (because downloading patches you WILL).

The ideal though is to copy the fully patched client from someone [this is legal to do].....and then only buy the expansion account/keys when you actually reach those levels [that's what most newer players do] .

To answer your real question: You don't actually have a choice , you can only play them in sequence [WoW first, BC next, WOTLK next] ;). If you have BC, install it, it's not going to change your "main story". You see, WoW is actually a very linear game until you reach the max-level ;)

Yes, without the expansions, you looking at downloading +/- 5-6gig worth of patches. So if your paying for your megs, it really makes sense to buy and install the expansions. After that Ithink it's 800m-1.3g worth of patches you need. Alternatively you can ask nicely for somone to write you the patches and mail it to you.

Thanks for the info guys.

I've installed both and now see that there is a 2.5Gb (!!) patch that needs to be downloaded and applied.

holy cow?! thats the biggest patch i've ever seen! seems like it's a bit like steam ... downloading the entire game.

anyway - thank goodness for the office and it's fast (and free) internet connection :D

If you're new to Wow you don't need Burning Crusade or Wrath Of The Lich King expansions. It'll take you a few weeks, perhaps a month or two to get to 60 then look to getting Burning Crusade and that'll keep you busy for a while :)

Thing is, what if he wants to play a BE.....

Buy the WotLk expansion DVD.

Whether you buy the expansion or not, you will still need the full files and download will nail your cap, which includes the expansion. Its just locked. Buying the WotLk DVD will save you gigs of download. You will just need to catch up the last few patches.
