Anyone use it to play? Will be moving a few times in the next year, so dont plan on getting DSL. Want to know how 3g will treat me...

I use 3G at work to play wow, pings varies from 600ms to 5000ms.

All depends on the day, somedays it's better than ADSL someday it's like playing via post.

Dont even try playing during busy hours (5pm to 8pm), ping will be in hours.

I also use Vodacom 3G. My ping hovers around 700 with the lowest being about 450. You do get lag spikes, although it isn't as common as it was 6 months ago.

I don't have any problems playing between 5pm and 8pm, so I think it has to do with area. I do have some problems on Saturdays and Sundays during the day.

There is a problem with the connection resetting sometimes, but it doesn't happen often to me. Getting it fixed is sometimes problematic. Sometimes I can just disconnect and reconnect from VMC. Other times I have to unplug the modem. Sometimes I have to restart my pc, but that usually happens if I've been playing for most of the day or my pc has been switched on for a long time.

In short, its acceptable, but there will be times when you will be swearing at Vodacom because you can't play.

I'm using iBurst Giga 1GB. I have never been disconnected and the latecy varies from around 500-700ms. During Raids, I think my pc lags more than the latency because the latency generally doesn't get bad.

The nice thing about iBurst is that it has a soft cap. So when my cap is done then I can carry on playing and doesn't make much of a difference to my latency. :p

I believe that MTN have a better HSDPA solution for Wow based on some South Africans that raid with it.

The trick is to stop it switching between 3G and HSDPA ... there are ways I believe.

I know a guy who plays diablo 2 online and he gets 400-700 ping playing on europe Bnet servers.

My mtn data card gave me 270-400 ping..

But try before you buy is my best advice ;)

I think a big thing is what you are expecting to do in wow whilst on that connection and what your definition of "playing" is.
Some people are satisfied to be able to log into wow and chat to their friends and guild members, maybe check their auctions and perhaps do one or two dungeons.

Others only define playable if they are able to compete competently in arena and so on.

My self (on a fairly decent adsl line) have pretty much given up on arena because playing with 600-800 ping gets infuriating after a while - however I still love pvp and do alot of battlegrounds.

All in all from my side and from the posts above, I think that it should be doable. Also I guess playing with a South African guild or group of players makes life easier because they understand if you get DC every so often etc.

Just my two cents :)
