For those who don't know, I am busy making a MyBB news app for Windows Phone 7. This is not affiliated by MyBB.
This is purely for news, and not the forum. At present the base functionality is pretty finished, but alot of work needs to be done on the visuals.
Also, I made this over the weekend with no ADSL (using a stupid MTN 3G stick), so it's very light on traffic (else I would be poor :P) and super fast. The app will work on local interwebs.

What I would like is for those (including people I've already spoken to) that are interested in trying out the beta, to mention so below.
From there I would like you guys to try it out and give comments on what features are missing/broken, and on things like incorrect flow withing the app etc.

For this you will require:
Marketplace access
An actual WP7 (doesn't have to be developer unlocked)
And you will need to send me the email for your live ID used on your phone

Thanks.

I'm interested. Keen to check it out. I'll PM you my email.

Unfortunately I do not have marketplace access but I do however have a developer unlocked phone. If you want you can send me the xap file and I can deploy it to my phone.

It's great that you are doing this btw. :)

Great! Glad there's interest :).

@Solitude, sure, will give you the XAP.

Let me know feature suggestions if you have any.

Just for interest sake, how would one copy a XAP file to the phone?

okay, is it easy to unlock?
Unlocking as we refer to it is developer unlocked. That means that you have payed microsoft the yearly fee of $99 to have access to sell your apps on the marketplace, along with "unlocking" your phone to be able to run stuff you make on it.
There are other ways of unlocking a device that are less legit. Plus the WP7 Chevron team are working with MS to get that fee way down for people who just want to play their own games/apps but dont want to sell.

Okay thanks for the explanation.
Would one not be able to just copy a XAP to the phone and execute it? I know that you cant copy these files via Zune but what if you use something like a HTTP file server http://www.mobilejaw.com/articles/2...transfer-files-to-your-windows-phone-7-device ? /sorry about all the questions, I only got to play with a WP7 for a short while. It just seems so limited atm.

The short answer is no - it is not allowed.

Part of long answer: The xap get extracted onto the device on installation. This helps with application startup in that the app don't have to extract the xap everytime it wants to run. When you then download a xap and try to run it, it won't be able to run it since it can't be extracted and installed - won't be allowed. This also poses a HUGE security risk to which they don't want to open themselves to.

In Order to prevent piracy Microsoft changed the way applications work on Windows CE 7+. You can no longer just copy applications on the phone and just run it, well in fact they went the Apple route and dont give Users/Developers direct access to a Unified File System anymore.

Thanks guys, Well that sucks! So you have to re-download all your apps if you did a hard reset?

Glad I sold my WP7 :p.

So you are glad you sold your phone because if you ever reset it you would need to download a few games again? Interesting that you ignore that everything else is backed-up to skydrive...
Anyway, back on topic.

No, I am glad I sold it because I felt that I was limited back into the dark ages.

Lol, when last did you take a look at OOB data charges?

And no , I am glad I sold it because I felt that I was limited back into the dark ages. Even WM 6.5 was less limited.

Some of the problems I ran into:

-It cant sync with Outlook. (All my contacts was on there so I had to make another plan.)

-No USB mass storage mode. How am I supposed to copy a PDF that sits on my desktop to the phone? Zune only does multimedia right?
(I tried to install Zune but got a silly error message that directed me to another 200 meg download, which I did download and only got another silly error after installing that / I eventually installed Zune on another machine and it worked.)

-No DivX/XviD video support. With Zune, videos takes ages to convert & copy to the device. (Seriously? No copying a video to the phone and use another player/codecs to play it?)

- No expandable storage. Well not on my phone at least.
(so I need to live with 8GB for the rest of my life? and yeah I know about skydrive bla bla bla... see my first sentence)

- No custom ring tones (You kidding me? My 5 year old Nokia does that.)

- No internet tethering support (Let me quote another member on this forum: "haha fail. well I think windows mobile has always been fail, from those dredful iMates to the new ones, that don't tether, rofl.") BTW AFAIK WM 6/6.5 had WiFi tethering before andriod (I used it on my TYTN 1 back then).

- No way to set a static WiFi IP. (So the way to avoid ridicules 3G data prices. Just use WiFi right. Wrong! Well at-least not if you don't have a DHCP server. In my case the DHCP server only gives out IPs that does not have access to the internet. So I needed to set a static IP. I ended up making a DHCP reservation for the phone. Great! so now the phone had WiFi internet access. Tried to install some apps, got "there is a problem, retry later" errors every time I tried. I gave up :/

Need I go on?

Don't get me wrong, I think it has great potential. And some really nice features. I even try to defend it whenever someone shrugs it off as a "fail". And good on you for trying to give WP7 users a better experience.

Ok, thank you for actually having reasons. The most common one is usually something along the lines of "M$$$$$$ n0t gona get minez moneyz...derp!!!!" :P
-I have seen people mention the outlook contact thing, for me it is not a problem because all the contacts I use are in exchange and those do come up.
-USB thing really sucks, along with the codec problems - both are a ball ache but don't often effect me
-Tethering and custom ringtones would be nice, with the latter coming in mango
-Really? I've never looked because I do have DHCP everywhere. I think this might be in that HTC WiFi app for hidden networks, may be wrong tho.

So, I do understand all your complaints, but personally they don't effect me.
Hope to see you back in our camp with W8!

Yeah sorry for the derail, but at least we are bumping your thread :). I could find no commitment from MS that Mango will get tethering. With regards to static IPs, I read on various forums that it cant be done. / had no HTC WiFi app on my Samsung :p

Small update: I emailed rpm about possibly having something to do with this and have received no reply in a few days, so will assume that this will stay independent.

This app is not for Apple or Andriod so doubt it will be endorsed. This forum is way to anti Microsoft and pro Apple/Driod.
