Wrong e-toll bill? Your plates may be cloned

ZOMG NEVER! THE ALUMINIUM PLATES ARE SO MUCH MORE SECURE.... :rolleyes:
 
This was a problem way back when the Etolls were suposed to be launched all that while back

Say I have a new super dooper secure Aluminium plate on my car.
Vusi Mona writes down my numberplate
Goes to an unscrupulous sign maker, and has a perspex plate made up with my registration number, or pays said unscrupulous signmaker some kickback and gets an embossed ally plate made, and runs up bills.

How exactly did having a ****en ugly aluminium embossed plate protect me?

In actual fact I have perspex plates on my car (from the days when they were still legal). How am I MORE at risk now?

I remember that was my first question when e-tolls were mentioned. What the f are you supposed to do if someone clones your plates?

You would be a "hacker" :p

Technically the PoPo (which are scant on numbers on the highways) should pull you over for having a perspex plate for any numbers after a certain range.

Not that e-tolling should be happening anyway and to try to rely on number plates is folly..
 
My wife's front plate was stolen... so we are just waiting for the eToll account now :/

I have cable tied the new one down now but that will just make it harder to get off...

Personalised plate that I've had since 2005 ;) It does tend to imply hackery though :cool:

but this is the other thing what is stopping someone from going and taking number plates off of scrapped cars or even just stealing them from a club parking lot. They don't even need to get them made up.

That's why its best to pop rivet them onto the license plate holder if you can, they can still steal them if they have a drill but its more work for them..
 
There are thousands of dodgy licence plate makers out there who will happily make you perspex or aluminium plates with any registration number you want without any questions or paperwork for a little extra on the side. There's no need to physically steal someone's numberplate.

mine are poprivetted on (actually by law I think they have to be fix mounted onto the car). but anyone with a portable drill can come in and just 8 small drills later they have two number plates ready to use

Only for cars first registered after 2010
 
Anyone know what Vusi's number plate is, perhaps we should all clone his and stick it to our cars when we're on the freeway.
