I have had a WRT 54 G for about two years now and I am quite happy with it except one thing I have not been able to solve.

The router is very stable with normal web surfing, video transfers over WI FI but as soon as I want to move a large file eg XVID it falls over and reboots. If i break up the same file into smaller files there is no problem.

I have tried different versions of firmware (currently running dd-wrt) but they allseem to have the problem. I have even forced it to connect at "B" speeds which also does not help.

I have a SMC wireless bridge, Linksys USB WIFI adaptor and a D-Link PCMCIA card and they all experience the same problem when connecting to the router.

Has anyone else experienced this or is my router a dud?

The problem you are referring to is a known issue with the older versions of the WRT54G (Pre Version 3.0 I believe) The fix involves overclocking the router from its default of 200mhz to 216mhz (the issue has been sorted on the version 3.0, and the GL models)

Be very careful when doing this, as it is possible to brick the router if something goes wrong!

I am unable to find the link to the fix now (am currently being sniffed and monitored at work) , but if you search on Jawug's site, you should come across it. Can any of my fellow Jawug colleagues help with an URL?

EDIT - Found URL here

Thanks alot for the help. I have a version 2.2 so it makes sense. I'll do some research tonight.

I have updated my original post, with the URL where this was discussed previously.

Hope you come right!

thanks alot. I will try it tonight....just a question will the overclocking cause heat/stabillity problems?

no heat problems in the normal working environment.
stability - well one hopes better ;)

The newer versions of most firmwares do this automatically for you.

I did try to download the latest firmware from linksys it had no impact though... still had the same problem
