it goes like this:

i have 4 operating systems on this machine
1 - windows7 64bit
2 - vista 32bit
3 - xp 32bit
4 - another xp 32bit

so anyway, i was using xp then shut down, it prompted me to install updates before shutting down so i just said ok . . .

upon rebooting, when i boot into the same xp again, the system just freezes. try again, same thing happens . . . so i try safemode, and it hangs again, but not at the same place, just randomly during loading or just after login. i somehow managed to get in on safemode and did a system restore as i suspected the 2 windows updates buggered my os.

after sysrestore i started up and the problem persists, then i proceeded to delete the partition and restored a backup of the same xp, but the backup is more than a year old and only basic apps and drivers are installed on it. the partition restore went smoothly but when i log in it hanged again!!!

i suspected faulty hardware BUT inbetween all of this ive also booted into vista and win7 and neither displayed any of the issues so i ruled out hardware error, even did some stress testing in both and it works like a charm.

after that i remembered the other older xp installation that i also have then booted it up and alas, it went as far as displaying a mouse cursor bout then just froze.

so wtf now. im baffled, if it was hardware then why is vista and win7 working???

Maybe try a memtest on your ram or clocking your cpu down again...Other than that I'm just confused as you :)

already tried default/stock bios settings, no help

dont think i will work because then the old backup should also have worked . . .

this is very weird.

I'm gonna try a fresh install, if that doesn't work i will consult a traditional healer as a last resort.

So the pc wont run XP
I'm sitting here, wondering... WTF's the problem?
I wish all my PCs was like that

The only thing that is different from the other OSs and the one that is freezing is that it is on a different partion (assuming that each OS does not have it's own physical harddrive). This definitely sounds like hardware and is possibly your harddrive that is acting up.

Guys IIRC Lord Fubar uses one XP OS for work and the other for gaming. Something like that.

Let's please rather stop poking at him (trolling) and questioning him, and rather try help towards sorting this problem out.

vista and xp on 1 drive

then other xp and win7 each on their own drives . . .

if it is hardware then win7 and vista should also be stalling but they don't . . .

deep in the back of my mind i keep telling myself that it might as well be faulty hardware because that would not be half as bad as not knowing what the prob is. :o yes, not knowing is painful.

oh and btw dade, YOU OWE ME A LOS TEST:mad:

;)

Easy answer: One OS is enough to do everything.

your idea of everything might not involve everything that I get up to, let's not be ignorant ;)

lol, remembered when my PC couldn't run Ubuntu/Linux.it's a hardware problem, simple as that.i still don't use Ubuntu/Linux i find Windows more Pro and and better for hacking.

Lol @ this thread! U run 4 OS's on 1 machine and u want help? What do u expect?

ok its all fixed now, but im not gonna post the solution coz im too embarrassed to say what was wrong :o

oh and btw, having more than one OS on the same system is not a big deal, people have been dual/multi booting for many years. i fail to see why some people think of it as awkward or a risk in stability . . . meh
