My system is about the same
i have windows7/xp/vista ultimate.I use easybcd to manage my os's.I can tell you this your xp install will never have restore points that work correctly.If you have a multiboot system with vista you will loose all xp restore points,or they will be corrupt.
The fix to your problem(not the restore problem ok) is that you should install the systems in a specific order.Also easy bcd should be installed on vista.
What i do know is that there is drivers loading up on xp start up.Check for disk error or partition errors.
