Hey guys

This post is proudly brought to you from my recently installed Ubuntu OS. :)

I did it the dual-boot way via Wubi. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I decided to go the root way and do a proper install. There's no place for Windows on my computer

What is better? Running it in Wubi or doing a proper install? Is there any performance loss in Wubi?

Proper install will result in better hard disk access times. Usually fragmentation will impact on performance. If installing by using Wubi then ensure that you regularly defragment your hard disk.

I've read that wubi's performance will be slightly slower than that of a normal install.

+1
Yes. Wubi is similar to running a virtual machine, but imagine it a virtual machine with 100% CPU and RAM availabbility (instead of running XP/Vista AND Linux).

Yep. Like a shortcut in the boot loader to that virtual machine, instead of having it within the other OS.

What is the performance?

The performance is identical to a standard installation, except for hard-disk access which is slightly slower than an installation to a dedicated partition. If your hard disk is very fragmented the performance will degenerate.

Is this running Ubuntu within a virtual environment or something similar?

No. This is a real installation, the only difference is that Ubuntu is installed within a file as opposed to being installed within its own partition. Thus we spare you the trouble of creating a free partition for Ubuntu. And we spare you the trouble to have of having to burn a CD-Rom.

Personally I think if one is ready to make the move, dual boot. You can even transfer your wubi install to a partion on the hard drive
