Hi
I am new here and have checked all the threads in this section but cannot find an answer.I hope someone can help me please.
I am living in the UK and am trying to connect to Xbox Live using a direct connection to my cable modem using an ethernet cable.
Xbox confirms the IP address but always fails on DNS.
If I set this to automatic it fails instantly.
I think I have located the DNS for Virginmedia.co.uk (my iSP) and entered this manually in the xbox settings but still no joy.
Is there anything else I should be trying?

Have you checked your router's settings?

It sounds like a port forwarding problem...
Check www.portforward.com for your routers details and make sure it's all alive.

Also make sure you router is handing out IP addresses and the like

Direct connection with modem only
a. If you are using a direct connection with a modem connected directly into the broadband socket, the DNS address settings are obtained from your ISP. The Dashboard network settings should be set to Automatic.
b. Power cycle the modem, and then try to connect again.
c. Manually set the DNS addresses in the Dashboard. If you do not have these addresses, contact your ISP.

also set the dmz option on your router and give it the ip of the xbox
