I am looking at upgrading my 7600GS to the Asus ATi Radeon X1950PRO. I see it's going for R1771 at Take 2 (http://www.take2.co.za/product.php?id=2358168). This seems like a great deal. Anyone else here get a X1950 Pro somewhere else for cheaper? Any other brands worth a look in the X1950 Pro range other than Asus?

Please no suggestions to get something that's more money. R1700 is the limit. My supplier is getting the 512MB version soon but no idea on price yet. Would it be worth it waiting for an extra 256MB?

Does the 512MB one do DX10?

It's not an DX10 card. In that price range I am looking at a 8600GT for DX10 which is nowhere near as good in performance. So I am happy with the DX9 option.

you wont be very soon man

rather save up get another 1300 and buy a 8800gts

your going to regret this move in 3-4months

R3000 on a gaming card is crazy to me. like I said, no suggestions on getting something else. I only have R1700 for a card and that's it.

You could wait a few weeks for the ATI DX10 mid range?

The HD 2600 Pro's specs were (finally) release a few days ago. It doesn't look too bad, and the 2600XT should be good, but probably more than R1700.

However these cards might not be much better than a 8600GT XXX which goes for R1600, you're only other real option now if you want DX10.

I am not rushing to get rid of my current card so I am willing to wait. this is some useful advice. We could all debate for years if the DX10 option is worth it. I might investigate the mid range of the ATI's. I have been keeping up to date on the new 8500 and 8600 series. I wasn't too impressed. I am a huge nvidia fan but when it comes to bang for buck the X1950Pro seems hard to beat. Let's see what happens.

dude its not a debate

dx 10 will be the new standard for all games very soon, and yes you'll run dx 10 on dx 9 im sure but the quality of dx 10 vs dx 9 is amazing

you'll be sorry if you buy this card now, what card do you have?

I think it is a debate, simply because of the lack of DX10 cards atm, and because of the available cards themselves lacking.

Everyone is going to end up with DX10 cards, just like with DX9 or DX11 etc.. but whether it's a good idea to buy the 8600GT over the X1950Pro right now is up for debate. If you can't afford the 8800GTS then that's about your only option.

Ya, it is still a debate. DX10 is still a way off being mainstream and the cards that are out with DX10 are all still pretty poor, except the 8600GTS and the 8800s which come at a cost. The HD2900 is good too, but it also costs an arm and a leg.

The entry-level DX10 cards aren't even worth considering as they are so underpowered that when DX10 does come around, they wont be powerful enough in themselves to run the game nicely anyway....

All in all, I would go for the XFX 8600GT or the X1950.

so wait, would you put the performance of the 8600GT close to or the same as the X1950Pro?

I haven't seen any offical benchmarks of these against each other. I have only used toms graphics charts as a guideline. From what I have seen the 8600GT is close to that of the 7600GT, the 7600GT pipping it in 3/5 tests on one site. Then the 7600GT and the X1950pro comparisons are BIG. Like 40fps for the 7600 and 61fps for the X1950Pro. That's 50% extra performance. Same goes for 3DMark06 (1537 vs 2700-Pro). Considering they are the almost the same price (at most R150 diff), the Pro seems like the one. Am I wrong here?

Ja I saw that but it means nothing to me. I sort have to see 3DMark scores which are more reliable. I tried to do a search on ORB but couldn't get a proper comparison.

Either way I think I am going to wait till those mid range ATi DX10 cards make their entrance. Or at least the reference ones.

Good plan. Just hope they are favourably priced, otheriwise you might still end up better of with a trusty 8800GTS...

Heres a good review that has the exact XFX 8600GT XXX card up against the X1950Pro. The 8600GT is R170 cheaper and if you are already (or planning to) run Windows Vista, then the performance is comparatively better for a DX10 card under Vista than DX9.

The card performs much better in the latest games, especially the new Rainbow 6, which is based on UT 3, a DX10 game. So it should perform better in newer titles and obviously in DX10.

You'll see you can even overclock the factory OC'ed card... I actually am atm. but you'll still see that the X1950Pro is a better card in general, yet the 8600GT isn't as bad as some would have you believe...

EDIT: A few more...

http://techreport.com/reviews/2007q2/geforce-8600/index.x?pg=7 (It beats the X1950 Pro in Oblivion :D, pretty much why I bought it)

So in summary:

3dMark06: 8600GT - 5213 (OverClock - 5790) and X1950Pro - 5047
Only in the SM3.0 score did the Pro beat the 8600GT.

So now it's time to see what ATi offer us. Will they come in at the same price at the 8500 and 8600 series. Who knows. Thanks for that information.

The XFX 8600GT XXX is going for R1632 at Take2 and the X1950Pro for R1771 as we already know. Hmmmm . It's cheaper and seems to be better. Exactly what I didn't think when I started this thread.
