I need to buy 2 severs for a School setup. +- 80 Domain Users.

First one will be for Active Directory and all the other basic services (DNS, DHCP.... ). This PC will also have SQL Server installed. (not a very active DB).

The second Server will be for Exchange 2007. (+- 30 Mailboxes, 500MB traffic per month) What do you suggest for this. Will a x64 Desktop PC do fine, or are there Entry level servers out there for < R 8000-00. (Until now a P4, 3GHz with 1GB Ram did a fairly good job with Exchange 2003)

Budget is limited.

I would go with a regular desktop PC with RAID1 drives.

I would use a 7300 dual core with 4GB ram and a decent motherboard. Should come in at more that R5000 headless.

2x1TB or 500GB RAID1 for data and 2x80GB RAID1 for OS. Got to have some redundancy built in.

That processor is pretty pap in comparrison to a 7300 to be honest. What are they asking for the box?

And I meant to say my suggestion shouldn't come in at more than R5000.

The HP comes in at +-8000.

I see the E7300 has a bit more than the one in the HP. Good price as well.

Will go hunting some more.

The proliant is a great little server. Do not worry too much about comparing processor specs; if the P4 worked well then the new server will work to. Average server processor usage is less than 10%; 99% of the time the processor is the last thing that you should be concerned about....

I ordered a box with a E7500 processor, 4GB Ram. It comes to just over 5000.
