Any dev's here using Xamarin? Care to post some resources for first time users specially for Android.

You may want to try the VS2015 rc. Haven't tried it yet but apparently already has android dev built in, and ios is in the pipeline. Could be a huge game changer for .net.

It has an Android emulator, you can't code Android apps using C# without Xamarin AFAIK.

It has Xamarin projects built in, but you still need to download it, and license it.

The monthly sub to use Xamarin put me off.

VS2015 preview also has C++ for Android support on some or another platform. Did not take much notice of this though.
We decided to go Android Studio. Pity though cause I love the VS IDE.

We took the plunge and got a licence and haven't looked back since. But there are so many ways to skin that particular cat (android dev) that it all comes down to the skill set you have available and personal preference.

Just don't kid yourself and think it's going to make cross-platform easier. We share maybe 20% code between Android and iOS and I'm still not even sure that 20% is worth the trouble.

But getting a bunch of devs skilled up on java and objective-c was a big problem and Xamarin solved it very nicely.

Yes, yes, I know it's still expensive, but they're running a special at present.

There’s never been a better time to be a mobile developer, and we want to help new mobile developers get started with Xamarin! To take advantage of all the awesome new features we’ve launched recently, we’re excited to offer you 20% off any Xamarin Platform or Xamarin University subscription!

[snip]

Please keep in mind that this offer is valid for new Xamarin customers only. To redeem your offer, please reply to this email by 12pm PST on November 28, 2014 to let us know you’re interested and we’ll get you all set-up.

As a smallish dev company even a 20% discount ($83pm/$999 per dev for the lowest spec that supports VS) makes it worth our while to rather go through the pain of re-skilling in Java on Android Studio or Eclipse. This is where MS will haemorrhage developers.
