Today there's some good news for XBMC fans as version 12 of the popular open-source home media center software, codenamed ‘Frodo,’ has been officially released. The new version has a number of new features and improvements including Live TV and PVR support, which allows you to watch Live TV, listen to radio, and access a TV guide. The update also includes a new audio engine that provides access to a variety of HD audio standards including DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD. Theres good news for AirPlay users as well, as the new version of XBMC comes with improved support for Apple’s wireless standard, including the addition of AirPlay audio streaming for Windows users.

A major new feature coming with the update is official support for the $35 Raspberry Pi micro computer. The Raspberry Pi has the potential to be an excellent entry-level media streamer as the newer "Model B" now supports 1080p video. Frodo also includes "initial" support for Android which, unlike the XBMC Remote app, includes the full range of XBMC features and support for most devices.

With version 12, the XBMC foundation is persisting in its efforts to make the media center software the go-to platform for your living room. But with multiple software and hardware vendors fighting the war for your TV, XBMC faces an uphill battle to stay relevant in the space. The full list of new features and improvements are available here; or if you’re ready to try it for yourself you can head over to the official site for the free download.
List of new features:

HD audio support, including DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD, via the new XBMC AudioEngine (OSX/iOS not yet available)
Live TV and PVR support
h.264 10bit (aka Hi10P) video software decoding for anime
64bit support in OSX to match the 64bit support in Linux
Improved image support, allowing the XBMC database to accomodate numerous additional image types and more interesting and complex skins
Support for the Raspberry PI
Initial support for the Android platform
Improved Airplay support across all platforms, including Airplay audio in XBMC for Windows to match the other platforms
Improved controller support in Windows and Linux
Advanced Filtering in the library
Video library tags to complement movie sets
Advanced UPnP sharing
Default video languages now match the language being used by XBMC
Translations now powered by Transifex

Love the Airplay for Windows and new audio engine. The Live TV bit is lost for us SA users though and there's still limited skin support as far as I know, so still going to hold off on putting this on my main media machines...

Any idea if the Airplay support is synchronised across multiple machines to allow for multi-room audio?

Will have to ask someone to test that, I'm waiting until openelec releases a final build with frodo on it

This sounds great. Time to get my Raspberry out of it's box.

Just updated to the stable Frodo on the Mac and it is having some issues. I removed all previous sources and cleaned the library but the items remained in the database somehow. Added the sources again and refreshed the info and it added it fine, but now there are duplicates of the old data. Tried to clean the library only to have it hang on me each time I try.

Stable my arse! Going back to Eden...

EDIT: Okay gave it one more shot by deleting the old userdata folder and trying again and it is working up to a point. I get to halfway through scanning my tv shows and it quits unexpectedly. Refer to statement above...

DOUBLE EDIT: Was an issue with one of my show's .nfo file. Rescraped and all is fine. Ignore previous statement...:D

Been running it for a while, since rc1 I think. At first also had problems with my library, where it would just dissappear after an upgrade, however after realizing I need to export and re-import it, all was fine in XBMCland.

Updated to the final last night. Will check if the 1 or 2 niggles I had with the rc versions are now resolved.

I had so many "niggles" with the RC versions. My fanart and poster refused to download. Now with the final release all is well again. I want to figure out a way to make my old Winfast TV2000XP Expert TV Card to work with the Live TV function. Does anyone know a TV server app that would support my card? Cause I looked everywhere to no avail.

Can I install it over the previous Windows version?

I tried last night and it gave me hassles so uninstalled, removed the userdata folder and reinstalled it. Luckily my metadata is exported to the respective folders often so it is a breeze to setup again. Add my repos, reinstall a few addons and skins and I'm done. The only issue is PseudoTV which I'll now have to completely reprogram which is a bitch...
