Does this work in South Africa?
Do I need to use Unotelly to get the most out of XBMC?
What hardware do I need?

XBMC is now Kodi.
The Raspberry Pi 2 plus a few accessories is good low cost solution. Pi 2 build here.
Lots of addons to add whatever else you wish.
Can I access overseas content with Kodi?
How easy / complicated is it?
Been running XBMC and now Kodi for years as my HTPC.
Are there any alternatives to KODI / OSMC / etc? The Youtube app is very basic and hardly ever returns the same content as on my PC. My wife started watching Youtube exclusively and don't like the Raspberry Pi as much as the XBOX for this reason. But since we're living off-grid, I want to cut down on unnecessary power draw at night. The Xbox uses 300W, as apposed to the Pi only about 2W!
Buy an Amazon Fire TV Stick and sideload xbmc/Kodi You can also run Netflix, Hulu+, YouTube and Plex. It's cheap and uses very little power.

You can install kodi on either model as their mini computers with intel atom cpu's.
Storage is limited, if you intend to store instead of streaming you will have to add a external hard drive.
Is it any better than a Raspberry Pi 2 b+? I currently have a Raspberry 1 B+ but am very disappointed with the performance. Playing videos over the LAN isn't too bad, but streaming from Youtube is just plain impossible. At the very same moment I wife would search for something on her laptop or the xbox and play it. Yet the Raspberry takes ages to search something and then playback either never happens or only after about 10 minutes.
Sadly I couldn't get showmax to work on it either.
