About 18 months ago my XBox RROD'ed on me. I did some handy work and pulled it apart and added various heat sinks to the video RAM and it was all working 100% since. Tonight I was watching a movie via MCE and after about 2 hours the picture artifacted and the console froze. I could still use the remote and could hear me moving around the different console options. I did a hard reboot (pulled the power out) and tried to reboot and I get a blank screen but no red lights. Is my beloved XBox gone to the farm?

Is there a way to possibly restart the graphics on the console or some funky key-combo I can do to factory restart it?

I did a little research berfore posing and it appears your machine is well on its way to displaying the dreaded RROD.
An XBOX will do that just before it displays the RROD.

You said you have modified the console before so im convinced its given up the ghost.
Leave it unplugged over night and try again in the morning, it might well perform a little longer.
RROD looks inevitable though.

BTW i assume your machine was out of warranty when you attempted repairs on it, but i would like to know what model xbox that was.
What wattage is the power supply?
202,175?

It was a sad story. It RROD'ed on me and when it did I went to the xbox site and typed in the serial and it said it was out of warranty so I performed the surgery. I was then told all warranties for RROD where extended so I could have had a lovely new HDMI version and it would probably still be working :)

I looked on the brick and can't see either 202 or 175 but there is a 203W??? Does that sound right? It is the old school one before the HDMI version. It is one of the first premium ones with the 20Gb HDD's

Yeah i got 1 digit wrong, that would be a Zepher model
.
Happened to me too, but at least you have a HDD and extra control for a new one.
Sell that unit to somebody, because the Xbox drive is quite pricey to buy.

At the very least it would subsidise the cost for you.

Good luck James;)

Thanks dude, the hunt for a new console begins...

EDIT: It has officially RRoD'ed on me now, time to bring out the trusty towel I think :(

You have nothing to loose.

When mine RRODed on me after warranty and the towel didnt work, i froze it for 2 hours!
It switched on and it bowed out at the same time.[After removing the drive of course!]
Sticking with Xbox?

I still want another.

Sticking with Xbox?

I think I may give PS3 a try, only problem is I have guitar hero with drums and 2 guitars and a bunch of games I am now going to have to flog if I go PS3 route. Only real reason is I watch a lot of movies so it acts as a media centre 2 and PS3 has the blu-ray which is swaying me now. MCE is really good on the xbox and that might swing me back.... Decisions decisions!

If money wasnt an issue for me and i loved watching movies, then i would definitely jump on the PS3 bandwagon with that Blue ray player.
Did you check the refurbished PS3 consoles on special at game?
It was like R2999 with 2 controllers and a game!
It was the older model[linux for a nice pc too;)] so it has its benefits.
The sale is probably over but im sure you can still get a similar deal elsewhere.

Lets see what others think of your situation.

Freaken lovely!
I have access to a number of dead consoles and figured that a fix was only temporary.
Now R850 for a revival?
Great deal:).

That was a scary video to watch... Really hectic though, I never knew that was possible!

Thanks demon angel for the Game tip but I am in the UK now so will just rely on (un)trusty eBay and find myself a deal there.

Lol!
Thats awesome man.
I just reckoned you were in SA for a while otherwise yeah Game not an option.
You have lovely interwebz too dont ya?
Im also on ebay trying to find a few odd collectibles.

Work line is awesome, we have 20Mbup/20Mb down dedicated on a 2:1 contention. I can't complain with that :D

At home I have 10Mb down / 512Kb up cable (supposed to be fibre backhaul) and I get really good speeds from it most of the time. Think it costs me around £18pm (R200). It has an annoying cap on it though which throttles you down to 2Mb if you download more than 1.5Gb in certain hours of the day. That gets really annoying!

Sounds awesome.
Over here our interwebz are still slow.
If you read this forum, you would have heard Telkom was going to announce new speed upgrades.
Still nothing.
And im still on 384Kbp/s!:(

I really, really, really envy that connection though.

Im derailing here and i apologise.

PS3 FTW?:D

Unless you bought your 360 recently, power supply is not a good way to check the model. My Jasper came with a Falcon's power supply back in March 2009.

Oh yeh, it's still working fine. Use it almost everyday too. I'm confident Jasper solved the overheat = RROD issue.

Really?
This is the guide i follow:
Xenon,Zephyr uses the 203w PSU/Falcon has the 175w, Jasper has the 150w PSU.
And to make extra sure i usually use the power connector pic to make 100% sure:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/ben-heck-spots-a-jasper-in-the-wild-tears-it-up/

Im also reading that the Jasper has really helped the RROD issue but hasn't fully stopped it.
Eg:Placing your Jasper 360 vertically cos it looks pretty causes heat to stay trapped on the side of the console.

Google have many stories of Jasper owners succumbing to this ill fate, but it happens less.

Install your games to the hard drive. Thats the best way to prevent RROD and to keep the thing quite:D
