Xbox 360 Issue

Here ya go!

I recently got my Xbox 360 console second hand. I switched it on, played Blacksite: Area 51 without issues.

Today I decided to hook it up to my internet so I could download my old gamertag from Xbox Live. I enter the dashboard with no issues whatsoever. Start downloading the update. My router switches off, so I have to restart the update which I then do. Update finishes, console restarts as it should, however now it goes to a purple screen just after logo. It reads "Cannot Detect Xbox 360 Hard Drive please insert" or something along those lines with the header "Update Failed" I have my friends 360 with me, so I stick my hard drive into his Xbox, to find it updated perfectly, I'm able to carry on downloading my gamertag on his with my hard drive without any issues at all.

To clear things up, I get this error message every time I switch on my console, whether the hard drive is in or not.

Should I burn an Xbox update disk? I've heard comments around the inserting a new disk will make it work. I tried inserting Too Human, is that too old a game if I updated my console today?

Also, is there any way I would be able to reset the actual console to it's factory settings and be able to access the dashboard again. Please note that I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS the dashboard at all.

Any help would be much appreciated. I'd like to get rid of this issue ASAP so I can get gaming.

Also, one last thing to add: I do not get any RROD of any sort.

Thanks for that, but yeah, as you all noticed, certainly not a common issue.

I have no idea how to handle things from here. I'm all out of ideas.

I doubt it's an update issue seeing as the HDD works perfectly and can run the games with the newest updates on another console.

I just need to find some way to bypass or message, or to reset the console to some sort of factory state without entering the dashboard.

Most likely it is an update issue, as it uses internal memory when installing. If this corrupted, then it wouldn't matter whether it was successfull on the external harddrive or not.

One problem is that if it thinks it has successfully installed, then it won't allow you to re-update (not sure, but it would make sense). Try getting the latest dashboard update, and if possible, try re-install.

The alternative is phone microsoft support, and maybe they'll tell you to swop it out thinking it's (or it actually is) a hardware fault.

This was the latest update. I'll try cold booting with the update I downloaded off Xbox.com and see what happens.

I somehow think it has something to do with the internal memory, does anyone know of any person who is quite skilled with Xbox 360's in Cape Town that I could get in touch with.

Called MS support, ****ing idiot was just reading off a page repeating himself, no help there.

You don't think I've googled it already? Heh yeah...

Reset controls that I've tried don't seem to work. I've tried the X, X, Left bumper, right bumper. Apparently they only work when you can access the full dashboard.

Mate, I've tried everything I've found on google, none of them work. I've exhausted all my options, which is exactly the reason I've resorted to posting something about it.

Have you tried holding the sync button?

First boot up the Xbox, whilst holding the sync button. Once it's booted up, do a shutdown while still holding the sync button.

Then restart the console, still holding the sync button (don't let go at any point during this process) then allow the 360 to boot completely.

If it still gives you an issue, then your internal memory is stuffed. Most of the SMD (surface mount devices) on the motherboard is proprietary components. Hot-air rework on the memory related chips might help.

If there's such expertise in Cape Town, I have no idea

I've tried that time and time again, with Too Human in the disk drive (for updates). Nothing unfortunately.

I also replaced the console with a more effective fan that circulates more air.

What exactly is Hot Air rework? How could this be a hardware issue if it only occured after the update, that's the one thing I can't wrap around my head.

As I said above, I've tried absolutely everything that I found on google. This includes holding "Y" on start up.

The odd console has an internal memory problem like you are having. One update gone wrong can stuff up the EEPROM.

In terms of hot-air rework, it's the process of using a SMD rework station to desolder and resolder faulty components on a PCB (printed circuit board) using a temperature controlled heatgun (you talking 300 degrees centigrade plus). It's the equipment I use for repairs on the 360 motherboard, and most electronic repair concerns in the industry (cellphone, PC mainboards, console repairs, etc).

As you mentioned that you used the HDD on another console, it cancels out the update storage. Then the only other thing can be a hardware issue.

I work with the 360 hardware on a daily basis, so I've learn't quite a few things in my time.

Would you be able to sort out the issue for me if I shipped my console up? Just give me a rough $$$ quote via PM if you could help.

Help me maestro_za, you're my only hope... (repeat hologram over and over.)

:P

Get hold of Mi Digital...but this worries me:
"I also replaced the console with a more effective fan that circulates more air."

Did you mod you machine or is the Nyko add on?

I can have a look at it for you. I work on a NO FIX - NO PAY policy. Postage details on my website (sig)

If you've modded the console internally, and the warranty sticker is "spoilt" ... MI Digital will probably not give you a swap out unit.

As for last hope ... I'm no Xbox 360 messiah. I do everything humanly possible to get a console to a working state.

Due to the complex nature of electronics, it's not an exact science

I modded the machine. The fan comes out without any soldering efforts though. As I said in my post everything worked perfectly prior to the update (including on board memory).

Warranty is voided unfortunately, and I ordered this off ebay (from america) as a stand alone console.

Quite ****ty having to dodge PAL games X_X.

I'll remain in touch maestro, I'll get back to you buy Friday if every single option or solution I come across doesn't work out.

Back to the topic though, any else around here have any experience with this issue?
