I think if you can afford the PS3 then go for it

Go for Xbox 360 becuase
1. Its been out for a yr now.
2. Its already a success.
3. Alot more games are out and more too come
3. Updates come out soo often like the new one coming soon givng you 1080p [whether or not you got a HDTV its future proof seeing as when DSTV goes the HD route you would prob want a TV thats supports 1080p and then enjoy it in all its glory.
4. Just think of that smile the little one is gonna get when he sees that piece of technology in front of him that one could only wish was in front at your time. Yes the little one may not understand it but how many off us need to when its the enjoyment that will count

5. Halo 3 (The FPS to consume all 360 games).
6. Xbox Live (Play againist the world. Not just the person sitting next to you).
7. Option to have next-gen DVD player (And an affordable one too).
8. It's got the best price (Not too cheap, but not too expensive either).
9. More then a gaming system (Listen to music, watch movies, chat with your buddies).
10. You can use all your crap with it (MP3, camera, even your PSP).
11. It's got a better game line-up (PS3 has some good exclusives, but 360 has a better line-up overall).
12. Media Center compatible (As well as some of the Vista's features when it comes out).
13. Great list of Arcade games (Classics like Uno and Doom, and cool new games like Cloning Clyde and TotemBall).
14. Backwards compatible (Currently, not all Xbox games are compatible, but eventually will).
Hope above pursuades you on the right track.
Personally I am gonna wait for both Sony & Nintendo to iron out their problems and so will work my @ss off for both their systems in the next year or so
