I just read about this xlink software today on http://www.teamxlink.co.uk and I was hoping someone will be able to tell me if this software will change anything on my xbox 360 itself or if it will be completely transparent and no data / code will be changed on the console?

It's something you install on a PC, not on the 360, the only thing you have to do is point the 360 to the PC as the default gateway instead of the router.

So no, it doesn't affect your 360 in any way.

Does it work?

Yes. But your Xbox then thinks it's on a LAN. If your ping is higher than 60ms, it won't allow you to join a game. So obviously it won't work on dialup (if anyone still uses that) and you won't be able to play with people from another country (unless you have a very fast line). Apart from that it works great.

Does it work?

I used xbconnect.com for about 7 months while I was in the UK and it worked like a dream. As long as you can get a few friends together it's good fun. It will list all the available servers and by ordering by ping you'll be able to see which games will run without lag.

As doobiwan says, it doesn't require any moderation or anything. You just setup the software on your PC and the Xbox 360 thinks it's running on a Lan enviroment. You might need to fiddle with network settings, otherwise it's pretty straight forward.

P.S. Here's the basic network setups: http://www.xbconnect.com/index.php?topic=networksetups

will this xlink work on local bandwidth???

ie i play against somone else and we both on local bandwidth???

When you play it uses peer 2 peer, so it will use local bandwidth. But for listing the servers you'll need international bandwidth. But you might be able to overcome that if you know the ip address of the person hosting. I'm not 100% sure on the last part though.

As I said, in principle yes that's how it's suppossed to work, but I've never used it. It's basically sets up a VPN.

Actually come to think of it ... I don't know why you couldn't just set up a windows VPN?!

now that sounds like a great idea if it works!

Long term sure, but your IP remains valid for at least 24 hours, if I'm not mistaken that was even supposed to become 7 days, but ho knows with Telkom.

On the other hand, maybe that's the benefit of Kai?

how would we go about it???

We set up a vpn over the internet and play i guess. But i don't really know how/which vpn software would be the best to use or how to use it. So I guess what I'm saying is that if anyone knows how to work with vpn's I'll help by joining your vpn or something like that :) (or if someone can show me how to work with it. I don't have international cap so I can't really ask google to help me right now)

I was thinking... even if one does get the vpn setup correctly between two computers over the internet, what IP settings must you use between the xbox and the pc? I made a pic in paint (dont laugh :p) of a general scenario. lets assume that the two pc's are already setup using vpn and work correctly, how will one xbox see the other? what settings would need to be changed? anyone have any ideas? click here to view pic

I've got 2 xboxs, 2 pc's, and 2 vodacom modems (i know, i need to see a shrink). I will try to see if I can get a vpn setup and working over the two xbox's using system link over vpn between the two pcs and keep you guys posted.
