Xbox dying?

So I got my xbox replaced about 3 months ago whe it suffered the red ring of death. But now it's acting up again. Games aren't playing (Cannot read disc errors. I just bought guitar hero 3 and it won't play), and movies don't play at all unless they're brand new. Am I in for another red ring of death, or do I need to try and clean the lens in the dvd drive?

It could be the lense.

I don't like those lens cleaning kits..

Though, I'm not sure of other alternatives..

Sounds like lens (the thing that all current optical based next gen systems suffer from). I honestly can't remember PS1/PS2/Saturn/Dreamcast giving this must lens problems in comparison to the PS3/Xbox. I wonder how the Wii is doing in that department.

Anyway back to the point, If it's still under the 1 year then send it back (instead of spending money to fix it)...if it's over a year and still under 3 years RROD then err....tell a white lie

o) ...something like you had 3 rings blah blah and still send it back.

The lenses didnt have to move as fast and read as much data those days as they do now ! I still have a dreamcast and its lens is only starting to act up now 9 years after it was made, same applies to my (still working) psone.

Could be, my PS2 from 2001 hasn't given me a days trouble.

As for the question asked, take it back and ask for a new one.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Thing is, I can't take it back. When my first xbox died, it was just within the 3 year warranty. ANd when I got the new replacement it was out of the warranty period.

Looks like i've have to try and clean it or replace the lens, as suggested by maestro. Has anyone actually tried anything like this? http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/cleaning_your_dvd_drive.htm

As far as I remember the warranty resets if you get your xbox replaced, so i say try that first, if its only been 3 months im positive you can get it swapped out.

Dude, pm maestro, the guy is a 360 tech of note, he should sort you out chop chop.

I'd see if you can get it swapped out. If its only 3 months old there's no way the lens should be dead.

It's not the first time a swapped out unit has a dead laser unit.

I'm not sure what batch these units are coming out of, but I've done quite a few laser replacements on a swapped unit.

MI Digital ... what gives? (rhetorical question)

Short term solution if you're maybe only reading games and not movies as an example.

The diode isn't giving enough power, which means a faulty laser to begin with.

You only get 90 days extra, or the amount of time left on your warranty - whichever is greater. The only time your warranty extends significantly is when you pay for repairs outside of the warranty:

Hmm. Just fished out my original purchase slip and I bought it in October 2006, which means it still falls under the 3 year warranty. But will this 3 year warranty only cover the 3 red lights error. or also the lens?

Unfotunately you won't be covered for the lens.

Are they giviving out rebuilt systems that they can't give a 3 year warranty?

It's a random process. Sometimes brand new, mostly refurbished units.

Make It rrod (wrap it in a towel) and tell them it's rrod then u'll get a new one
