Hi there

My son wants to buy the game Elder Scrolls Online for Xbox one, but apparently it requires a monthly subscription to Microsoft Live Gold at R150.

Can anybody tell me why such a subscription exists?

I bought the console from Microsoft...I buy the game from Bethesda...why a monthly subscription too? Seems a bit like extortion to me?

Thanks

Basically it's Microsoft's way of recouping costs for running their online servers. So you're paying for online gaming and chat, along with a few other things. You also get free monthly games with Gold and discounts. Unfortunately all consoles have this: Sony has PSN Plus, and even the Nintendo Switch is apparently going to have a similar subscription model.

It works out cheaper buying longer subscriptions. For example, you can get a prepaid 12 Month Xbox Live Gold membership for around R675, which works out to R56.25 a month.

I guess at least ESO doesn't have a separate subscription on top of that for console, such as games like FFXIV, but if you're only using your Gold subscription for just 1 online game, it can seem a bit much.

If you want to play online against (and with) other people, you need a subscription. Online games would therefore need a subscription.

You can get a 12 month subscription which works out way cheaper, from somewhere like cdkeys.com for about R600...

Was just gonna suggest this.
I got a 3+1 month one for R290 in November from them.

For that price, the two free games every month alone makes it worth it to me.

It is extortion - running servers is a minor expense.

It used to be worse - you used to need a subscription just to run the Youtube app.

For someone who plays occasionally (let's say not even every month), it is a complete ripoff.
Out of principle I would not pay for console accounts.

You do get four free games a month with your XBL subscription, 2 which you keep for ever as they are 360 games and 2 which you only can play while the account is live. Even for the occasional Diablo 3 or Borderlands I still play R50 or so a month isn't bad.

And they've been giving away some pretty decent games for free over the past couple of months!

lol, c'mon whats a few million US dollars for servers, support staff, software and data centers.... pffft minor stuff :D

from what i understand. Xbox games work fine without a subscription. Single player obviously. Once you go multiplayer online & access online services (streaming, youtube, etc) then the Gold subscription comes in.

Considering its 4 games a month + online multiplayer. I think its a fair price to pay?

You also get 4-6 free games every month while you have Gold and discounts on games from the store.
For the great online it provides as well as these other benefits I'll gladly pay.
Live just works.

These are all the Free games given away since the Games with Gold program started.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Games_with_Gold_games

So for more or less R1800 you would have had all those. + be able to play online, and get big discounts on Xbox Live Store bought games

Hi guys

If purchased online (via, for example, digicodes.com at R675 for an annual sub), is something physically delivered or is it just a redeemable code?

Thanks
