Why not just buy the game from the online store? Works the same way?

It does, but sometimes there's specials or sites that sells game codes. for cheap, or people selling codes that they got with the consoles that they don't need.
They all work with the game sharing. Even games that you buy from other stores. I've bought digital games from the US, Hong Kong, Australian, Canadian and ZA stores and my friend had access to all of them via game sharing.

EDIT: I also have an EA Access sub(US) and my friend have access to all the games in the vault without needing another subscription.

That's true but there are a couple sites that sell codes.
Know the Assassina Creed Unity ones were being flogged at R300 a piece. Join SA gamer and you'll hear of some specials here and there.

I bought from Game Deal Daily. Paid via PayPal.
There's also cdkeys.com which I've not tried yet. Also subscribe to The DealBreaker who sends out a daily newsletter with specials.

Ah, okay. I only knew of it working with download codes, but guess it makes sense for it to work through the normal Marketplace too.

Yep. Only have 3 physical disks. Everything else is digital.

These XBox One downloads are a killer though, normally 30GB+

Then there's the updates. 2 Updates for Assassin's Creed Unity was 4GB and 7GB respectively.

Bought the bigger games ie. Forza and Halo. CoD I downloaded. Good thing though is after 1 mate has the install you can just copy it and buy a license from the store.
