I fell for the Xbox One marketing as a central hub on entertainment in the living room - sounded fantastic!

But in reality, I think anyone considering a purchase for that reason, should steer clear. The surround sound settings are horrible - just Google. They've had numerous updates which have helped, but there are still limitations. It can't support certain codecs, forces to select others, bitstream doesn't seem to work, seems near impossible to pass through real surround sound. The sound reason alone is leave it alone.

Then Netflix - great it supports it, but why the minute waiting time ? ATV got into Netflix in 10 seconds - but for something seemingly 10x more powerful, the wait is 4-6 x longer?

Games - great! But they need to change their marketing. I think this takes the biggest waste of money category in 2015 for me

Why not just get an Xbox Two aka Xbox 360 if the Xbox Three aka Xbox One is so bad at that? Or a PS3?

This related to your thread about Kodi and surround sound? You finally get it working?

Lol. We could have told you that ages ago.

Thing is I had most the separate entertainment devices - only wanted the One to consolidate and make things easier. Single input... Stream everything... Get rid of my Apple TV etc

I'd have no issue if they didn't market it as a hub

I haven't yet.

I saw one guy can do it ; so asked him for the settings. But searching I came across a ton of people complaining about the sound input

Yeah that sucks. But the funny thing is the Xbox 360 and PS3 work just fine as media players. Don't know why the new ones don't, I've heard people complain about the PS4's media player capabilities as well.

And the need for multiple threads?

The one here was looking for guys with a solution they owned and knew the Xbox settings.

The one in the TV section was looking for guys that had Kodi and other entertainment devices, possibly not gamers and possibly don't come to this section

This final thread is the conclusion to for potential owners to avoid if they want the entertainment

Hmm, I was considering the xbox one for the same reason.

No DSTV integration yet?

I am sure as the time goes by the updates will fix all the issues. On the youtube clips I was impressed more by the loading time of things. My PS3 is a good media player but everything is just so slow. How much faster is the XBOX one?

I tried using my PS3 as a media player and I hated every moment of it.

A HP microserver running OpenElec does the job far better.

This is why I don't rely on consoles for the media entertainment. They're been designed from the ground up as gaming consoles (Xbox One an exception according to Microsoft; even then, they've failed) so I just use a dedicated HTPC for everything. When I want to play games I'll use the Xbox 360 for that, which I have no intention of changing just yet.

I have a SMART TV, Apple TV, PS4, Xbox One, Netflix, Hulu and Kodi - so essentially I have all my streaming/movie/entertainment needs taken care of anyhow.

However, after watching and reading the demos on the Xbox One, I thought I could sell off the ATV and combine both Xbox/Kodi into a single input - so just simplifying things slightly when it comes to controlling and using the system. My issue is that Xbox market it as an entertainment hub and the center of your living room and with the issues - it's far from it.

Perhaps in time with the upgrades it'll work - but currently for anyone thinking they could use as an entertainment hub, it's very flaky

I'm happy with my Xbox one, but I'm using it a little bit more than the average south African as I have access to Comcast and DirecTV (two cable companies in America).

I had to tweak my picture settings when I ran the DSTV through it as the default setup has some picture loss but it looks pretty damn good now (but not 100% perfect).

one thing I thought was odd was that hulu and hbo streams a better quality on the Xbox One than going through my ATV or the apps on the Samsung TV.

I actually haven't noticed - been concentrating on the sound.

But Xbox One Netflix loads so slow compared to both the ATV and Smart TV - makes no sense as it so so powerful compared to both

I'll try set up my Pi this week and redo it.
Know the sound settings aren't easy to do but didn't find them completely hard.

Will PM you when I sort it out.

Why aren't you using PCM instead of Bitstream?

Also you might consider running Plex on it to get past your codec hassles. How you ever expected a closed system not to give codec hassles is beyond me.

I've got my PC upstairs connected to my AV receiver and TV, and actually it does a pretty good job. A lot of new games that used to be console only, are now on Steam. For instance, I have both Darksiders games, a few of the Tomb Raider games, Mortal Kombat, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Injustice and Blazblue, all in Steam. And they all run great, look great, and work with my Xbox One controller as well as my two arcade controllers. And no disc swapping needed. Plus I have all of my other content on my PC.

Oh and those games would have been MUCH more expensive if I had bought them for a console.
