Codec issues should be fixed. @OP can you give me an example of something that doesn't play?

.mkv support and the like were pushed through months ago unless this was only in the Preview Channel.

I've tried everything - 5.1 uncompressed and bitstream, why would would bitstream be the wrong option? In normal products, bitstream means (AFAIK) the digital signal 1 and 0 and sent through with zero processing on the unit itself ... so the receiver can decode? That would be my preference

No it isn't codecs - it's the sound.

So everything plays, but playing a DTS movie on Kodi direct to my amp gives DTS - but the minute the Xbox is in between, this drops to stereo. It can't pass through surround through the HDMI in.

I suspect even with DSTV, ATV etc - the Xbox will dumb everything down to 2 ch when it is involved. So no point in even having an HDMI in or anything connected to the Xbox.

Is gaming not entertainment? My point is, why bother with an Xbox One when a PC can do everything it can do? And more, with no worries about codecs.

MKV is a container, not a codec.

But yes I do believe the codec support has updated greatly over time.

What do you mean Xbox is "in between" are you trying to stream from Kodi via the XO?

Isn't it possibly the DLNA implementation on Kodi that is the source of the problem?

Please explain your connections and what is where and how. Often the TV will downsample stuff to stereo so if you are passing through the TV that might also be a problem.

****ing is entertainment too...

my point is that a PC can cost thousands more than a console. graphics cards alone can be more than a console.

So can a TV. My PC is years old, haven't upgraded in ages.

Forget preference, find what works.

PCM is more compatible and it really doesn't matter who does the decoding at the end of the day. PCM is generally better as it's uncompressed and completely lossless.

Digital surround with TV on Xbox One
Support for digital surround sound from your cable or satellite box is currently available as a beta. By default, only stereo sound will be received.

Follow these steps to enable digital surround sound:

From Home, say “Xbox, go to Settings” or select the Settings tile from My games & apps.
Select TV & OneGuide.
Select Troubleshooting.
Select the Surround Sound (BETA) option.
Note Your Xbox One can produce digital surround sound for games and Blu-ray or DVD movies. Only the digital audio pass-through from your cable or satellite box is in beta.

My Xbox One is doing surprisingly well. I also have an Xbox 360 and must say there's things on my Xb1 that is a zillion times better...case in point : Multitasking . I can play a game AND a movie at the same time in a split screen....i can switch between a game and an app without it loading from scratch and do this back-and-forth (similar to alt-tabbing in windows). I.e. i can be inside a game, split the screen to open IE, read up on some strategies on the side, while still playing...

A few other things i am also using is the "TV" functionality with my Altech Node . If DSTV can get their stuff together, this would be really amazing. The node is also a satellite decoder which i am now feeding into the XB1, so i can now watch TV via the TV app . This implies i can split screen that too (while updating/loading a game) etc etc.

The cherry on top , apps like Popcorn Time and how it integrates with XB1

If you know that app, it's an app you install on your PC , and it streams movies/tv series via torrents.....it now has a "stream to xbox" button . So no cables, i just start it up on my PC and let it stream to my Xb1 . It will open up the video app on the console and start playing and off you go. I guess you can do this with a PS4 too, not sure.

I can't really comment on surround sound and all that, i am also using Plex on the XB1 for my tv series , which works just fine.

So in all honesty i guess it depends on how you use this , can't wait for Windows 10 which will add even more integration.

Read the advert on the entertainment side. I'm not talking about DECODING anything, I'm talking about pure pass through and being able to bitstream correctly. As I say, I have Kodi for entertainment and according to what Xbox wants you to believe, it can be the hub.

Even on the Dolby blog - http://blog.dolby.com/2014/04/get-best-sound-xbox-one/ - they claim. And check the comments to say they don'r work - and even Dolby was unware.

Exactly how I'm connecting - but the XB1 seems to dumb down the sound to 2ch this way - which goes against what Dolby and Microsoft are telling people. As a gaming system, great! But if you don't have surround sound ... you shouldn't really market how fantastic your device is as a entertainment hub

If you read my posts, you'll notice I never said it was a gaming PC. I just said that I play games on it. Big difference.

I don't care if you don't think it is a gaming PC.
