My box gave me RROD on Friday evening. So I'm gonna follow protocol and hope everything goes smoothly.

If not, I'm gonna go through Maestro or Velusion.

@Maestro - I've got error 0102. Can you fix this and what sort of permanency can I expect? Thanks.

Hi

0102 is definately fixable. It is a general hardware failure, meaning a cold solder joint in the CPU & GPU of the Xbox 360.

On average, a Xbox 360 fixed via reflow soldering will work for 1 year. It depends on many factors caused by the cold solder joint which is the root cause of RROD. The only permanent solution is re-balling of the CPU, GPU or RAM components, which is related to the secondary error code

The procedure shown in high magnification at board level, YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO1kN9Vw52Y

Anything less than a year, then either there is a bridged solder joint meaning the BGA components need to be re-balled {expensive} or the technician cut corners (incorrect reflow temp profile, too long or too short reflow period, or YouTube DIY videos was the point of reference [i.e. non-electronic principles]).

I cannot speak for Velusion, but their are allot of "console repair" guys with a shoddy quality of workmanship in the industry just after a quick buck.

Good luck with MI Digital. You might be fortunate and be assisted quickly :D

Thanks for the heads up. I've only done a PSP board swap at them before and have had no problems with it. Never really heard of any positive/negative criticism from them. Though I'll be trusting your judgment. Maestro it'll be!

Thanks for the reply maestro. I'm actually thinking of skipping MID, as I've heard they take aeons to get your merchandise back to you and I'd like to get my box back ASAP.

So the reballing method is a permanent fix unlike the reflow soldering method? I've checked up vids when I got the RROD, but I fear I lack the technical skill needed to effectively repair my box hence I'd probably damage it further.

So how much do you charge for the permanent fix?
Also, you're based in pretoria, correct? That might be problematic, though I have a friend who might pass through there I could ask him to drop it off.
Thirdly, I'm hoping it's a while you wait service. Is it?

Remember, I'm not promising I'll go through you, since I'm not the sole owner of the box. I'm just garnering some info. Thanks for your time.

Well, if you have R120 000 lying around for the equipment needed for re-balling, then you're my new best friend ;)

No one in SA does it on Xbox 360 consoles as far as I know. You will need massive volumes to justify such an outlay of cash. In the region of 10 RROD consoles a day. I average 5 Xbox 360 consoles a week with various issues.

I only do reflow soldering at this point in time. So if you're going to use my services ... that's all I can offer at this moment in time. You can browse my site for more info, the URL is in my sig below.

The 1 year lifespan is a reference point, as I've only been doing console repairs for a year now and that's my oldest customer and he's console is still going strong.

If by while-u-wait you mean he has the patience to sit for 2 hours, your friend can certainly do so. I can offer a cup of coffee/tea and DSTV while he waits :D

I have no problem giving info. I feel good business principles and integrity is better than shafting the consumer out there.

Cheers

Hi Maestro

I would like your opinion sincing you are more clued up on the xbox scene. A friend told me that the more recent xbox360's are less prone to rrod, how true is this? I've got an xbox360 manf date 2008/03/02 , should i be worried?

TIA

Falcon revision. I've not got any of them for RROD. Seems faulty lasers are the major problem with these consoles.

To answer your question - Only time will tell :D

Jasper models (Resident Evil 5 Xbox 360, etc) according to MS will be the most bullet-proof revision yet.

R120 000!? I sense that box repair services must be huge to warrant the cost of such equipment.

Okay, so R400 for a resolder that's likely to last me at least a year.

If I don't come right with MID, I'll give you a call.

Thanks again. Will definitely be referring my buds to you.

Hi

The equipment in question has to be imported. Add exchange rate, custom fees, VAT, etc, it works out to a pretty packet.

My volumes simply do not warrant such an expense at this moment in time. Big companies like Denel uses the equipment I'm talking about for the electronics they work with. It can be PC automated or semi-automatic so that an operator can handle such a delicate procedure.

If I ever grow large enough to warrant a full-complement of staff and a building of my own, I will certainly invest in a workshop with a full-range of equipment to handle the more high tech repairs.

Thank you for the recommendation. It's much appreciated ;)

Hey Maestro,

Have you managed to look at my problem yet? I want to get it sorted as I am having extreme withdrawal symptoms.

Pls let me know either way, as otherwise I need to make another plan.

Would just like to give a hearty thumbs up to maestro for a super service on my ill RROD console. Everything's back in order and I can finally complete RE5.

Hope to skip MID woes? Go to maestro. Comes highly recommended.
