Hi

I have a 19" widescreen LCD, when i set my res on my xbox to the max "1680x1050 widescreen", their is a black edge top and bottom, how do i remove it please?

Thx

if u guys want screenshots, ill upload it.

1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution monitor. XBOX widescreen is 16:9. So you will always have a thin top and bottom black strip on a 16:10 monitor.

to be exact i have a Topview A1981W screen, so u tell me this screen is not 16:9...why would they make a widescreen what is not widescreen really? (or use fully potencial*) ?

Widescreen is generally considered 16x10 and HD is considered 16x9. Games can not scale to a 16x10 resolution, so they add black bars on the top and bottom so that the visible part is showing a 16x9 aspect ratio. If you had a 16x9 monitor (ie: HD monitor) you would not have those black bars. You can set it to a resolution that takes the bars away, but that won't be your monitor's native resolution, which means you will have a blurry image on your screen.

Well, HD is 1920x1080, but you know what I mean.

*potential

In any event, you're looking at things from the wrong angle. Your screen is in effect "more than" HD, but it is not a broadcast standard aspect ratio. Hence, the Xbox effectively can't output an image sufficiently large to fill the entire screen, and you are left with the two thin black bars top & bottom.

Keeping your resolution's width of 1680 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio would imply a height of 945. The image your screen produces is 105 pixels taller, so you're left with a 52/53 pixel wide unrendered band above and below the rendered image.

the OP should just set his resolution to a 16:9 compatible ratio and live with the blurriness, or use his native resolution and live with black bars.

ok, so my screen is more than HD?

In terms of aspect ratio, kinda... but not in terms of resolution. Full HD res is 1920x1080.

The aspect ratio is a measurement of relative size of the width of a display as measured against its height. The proportions of your screen are slightly off the broadcast standard of 16:9 so you'll only ever see fullscreen goodness connected to a PC, not to a games console, Bluray player or widescreen television broadcast.

a LCd 27" monitor with 1920x1080, will be better than a 42" TV with 1920x1080 yes?

how do you work that one out? How is a 27 inch LCD better than a 42 inch LCD TV? It's only possibly better because you'd expect to be able to see the pixels more on the bigger screen. But in the same context, you are maybe 3 feet away from the 27 inch screen, and 6 feet away from the 42 inch TV? Also, alot will depend on exactly what kind of tv you have!

I don't really understand that question. Why would something that's smaller with the same resolution as something bigger be better?

And the people telling you that 1680x1050 is "more" than HD is being silly. An aspect ratio is an aspect ratio. One isn't "more" than the other. HD (1920x1080) is a standard.

On a 16:10 screen you will have black borders when using tv based meda. They adhere to the 16:9 standard.

A 27" at 1920*1080 will have better pixel density and be sharper than a 32" tv at 1920*1080. Problem though is most tvs don't use TN panels like cheap lcd monitors.

so , for gaming, to have quility, would u say i must get a 32" or 27" ?

If they are both the same resolution then it all depends on how far away you are going to sit from the screen and what makes you happy. It's not something that any of us can tell you. I would have gone for the bigger one. But then I don't know what your needs are. There must be a reason why you are asking that question but I'm not sure what the reason is.

If it still has to do with the aspect ratio then it's still up to you. 16:10 will have black boxes. 16:9 won't. Well except if you are watching something square and you decide not to stretch it. And also know that aspect ratio has nothing to do with size. For instance: You get 23" screens with a 16:10 ratio. And you get 23" screens with a 16:9 ratio.

For anything tv related, such as gaming consoles then preferably go for a 16:9 screen.

As for size? Well that's up to you.
