I just bought an external USB HDD (Western Digital Passport 320GB) to connect to my xbox. The idea was to take my xbox and HDD with me when I go away instead of taking a stack of DVDs and CDs with me.

I plugged the HDD into the Xbox, but it does not pick up the device ! WTF !
A simple memory stick works fine.

I thought any USB storage device would work.

Could I be doing something wrong ? I'm really pissed that the HDD I bought for this purpose doesn't work.

I plugged in a Seagate 500GB external beauty and it worked fine after using a tool called fat32format, its command line based but very easy to use. You can use partition magic or a win98 bootdisk to format it but that tool i mentioned is less hard work :p

download it from http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip

read the instructions from here http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

cheers N goodluck

PS
I assume u have computer knowledge so don't take it personally as this is for those who don't know how to format it :)

Thanks guys !

Just tried it and it works. But I can only create up to 32GB on FAT32 with Windoze XP

Now to find a prog to create a larger FAT32 partition.

Thanks, I was just posting that I need a prog !!!

Thanks Yuu. Worked like a charm.

(Came home via Heathrow today and I picked this drive up there for R1300. I could get the 500GB for the same price, but I wanted USB powered.)

Anyway, I'm a happy man !

Thought the xbox360 would support NTFS external drives? Can understand it on the PS3, but FAT32 on the x360? o.O

Oh, you can also use Linux to format bigger than 32Gb FAT32, incase you got an Ubuntu or other disc laying around.

I have also never understood the FAT32 requirement...

It just makes no sense.....

It's not that it can't read it: NTFS is secure and without the original formatting host to aunthenticate, you can't access it. FAT32 has no security layer.

Nice drive that passport, I've got the USB powered 160Gb, damn sexy too ;) R1300 is a good price, mine wa R1100.
