The normal xbox360 only has a component av cable that does support 720P , 1080i and 1080P. My 32 Inch t.v only supports up to 720P.

and the xbox360 so I hear also has an HDMI out.

What would be the graphical difference between component av and HDMI? If any? Or what other options will HDMI give for xbox and xbox 360 games? Thanks.

You'd probably be hard pressed to see a difference between component and HDMI

Yea they're right ... read the same thing when I got mine as I didn't know which was better. Most reports said they were the same.

I'm guessing the only difference would then be convenience?

Possibly - HDMI does have the audio built in so less wires. Is HDMI also more prevalent that component these days?
lol - I thought I was going to have to cry foul on that first link :D

Well most HDTV's if not all have at least 1 HDMI port, it's the 360s that you gotta hop have an HDMI port to output from. At least with the Elite, Lalo 3 and Arcade consoles you're guaranteed an HDMI port.

I'm running my 360 off HDMI right now. :D

EDIT. OT: bwana, have you sol your 360 or something? I sent you a FR and it's been pending for days now.

I lent my spare wireless AP to a mate so I havent been able to connect the 360 to the internet for a while now. I'll have to make a plan :)

Go with the HDMI, why use old component. You can do DVD upscaling up to 1080i with the HDMI on the Xbox, where as the component can, but they don't have the rights to do it, so it only upscales to 520 or something. (anybody can correct me on this, I'm sure somebody will :D )

But otherwise the games looks just as good on component as HDMI.

I don't think it only outputs 520 via component : my TV tells me the input signal and it says 1080i with the 'box though component. Haven't tried my HDMI yet.

Read up on DVD upscaling via component. Gaming is 1080i, but DVD scaling only goes upto 500 something.

HDMI is required for that copy protection crap for HD television. Both HDMI and Component are digital connections and thus, have zero quality loss. If everything goes through that's supposed to, they'll look identical. Before HDMI Component was the way to go if you wanted to watch anything at the highest quality possible. It's HDMI/Component, then SCART(Euro AV), then S-Video then Composite, when it comes to quality.

oh ... I meant gaming anyway : my Xbox has never seen a DVD ...

So I'm going to ressurect this discussion to ask a question:
I have a Xbox 360, a HD Ready (1080i) tv and a surround sound system.
If I connect my xbox to the tv via HDMI, I have to output my sound from the TV to the sound system, thats through a stereo out line so I end up NOT getting surround sound from my xbox.
If I use component in I can output my sound directly from my xbox to my sound system and get surround sound.
However, I'm being told that component is NOT as good as HDMI and I should sacrifice the sound to get the picture. Am I right when I say that there is no difference in quality? Or should I actually take the sound quality hit?

or get the best of both worlds, if you get the xbox vga cable you get hd viat the vga port (if your tv supports VGA port) the xbox vga cable has a digit audio output
