Arcade is your entry level with no HDD and a memory unit think 256MB

Pro - 20GB (Discontinued) / 60 GB HDD

Elite - 120 GB HDD plus headset and other goodies

The Elite comes in Black as well.

At the end of last year anyone buying anything other than the Elite was an idiot. It was under R3500. Sadly it is a lot more expensive now.

And might I add, they got the same CPU and graphics processor! I met someone the other day who actually thought that the arcade was weaker, like in slower with different hardware than the other!! Well, that is what you get from listening to sales people trying sell elites.

Rather get the RE5 Elite Bundle if you want to buy the Elite. You get RE5 and SF2 HD Remix with it all for free:D

Telkom is selling the Arcade version with 2x wireless controllers, 1x 256MB Memory Card, 2x Games and the Arcade Games.

R108 per month on your Telkom account. The easiest way to get one without haveing to pay cash.

Does is sound like a good deal?

Also keep in mind those freaking controllers cost a fortune (R500+). IF you get a bundle with 2 wireless controllers in it, it's definitely worth calculating it into it all.

I believe the differences between Arcade/Pro/Elite also include the accessories differences, as in getting 2 controllers vs 1 controller ...makes massive difference if you buy these things separately.

Is a Hard Drive a neccessity?

Well technically not for playing games, you only need space for save games (just like the PS2) and that'll fit on 256MB fine, BUT

1] If you are going anywhere near Xbox Live you probably will need a HD of some sort. Primarily because you can download movies [full movies mind you] , game demos and full games [this can be 1GB+] and alot of content for games you own [i.e. like an extra area in Fable 2 or additional songs for Guitar Hero] . In fact there's patches for games too [just like on pc].

2] If you plan to use your Xbox as a media player on your TV, then yes, obviously you'd want a HD. However in my case i stream everything from a PC anyhow (Xbox integrates nicely with Windows Media player).

3] You can install a game onto the HD in full, which has the same effect as on the PC [playing from the disc vs playing from your HD] ..faster load times , no disc swopping [if it's a multi disc game] etc etc. This can take up 8GB+ per game easily.

Now the only thing one can wonder about is how MUCH space you really need. I have the 20GB model, never felt i needed more, 160GB is too small for my movie collection anyhow so i would STILL have reverted to my 1TB/500GB external hard drives for media related action.

The xbox does have a USB port and you can technically plug in an external usb drive in there...but you need to format it a certain way [FAT32 i believe] and i don't know if it can be used for game content. But you should be able to use it for any media content [movies/music/pics]

Anyhow depends on your actualy intended setup, mine is Xbox -> Network Cable/Wireless -> PC -> 3G Modem -> Xbox Live (Internet). Since my xbox can access all my PCs content [via Windows Media player] -anyway- , i don't need to put anything on my xbox itself. However Xbox Live content is another story.

Thanks for the explination. It surely helps.

Just one more question. Can you buy a HDD for the Arcade version?

Thanks for all the info guys. I thought about getting the PS3 for under R200 per month at Telkom (80GB version) but that is a bit too much. And the games are too expensive.

Going to find out tomorrow about the Xbox360 at Telkom.

Just a note on the games and cost, you -can- rent games with a proper system in place, i'm using BTGames' service http://www.gamesunlimited.co.za . This works nicely, R100 a month, 3 games a month [1 at a time though] and you can rent any particular game as long as you want. Although it seems your satisfaction depends greatly on the specific BTGames branch .

That said, Xbox360 games are cheaper and more available anyhow [there simply are more titles available] , especially on the 2nd hand market. I almost never pay more than R300 for a game [unless it's a super AAA block bluster] . I mean Xbox games are already entering those "Platinum" and "Classic" phase where the game is like R250 new [like with the PC games going for R99].

Edit: Perfect Example : Assassin's Creed (on the Xbox) is now a "Classic" , you can get it for R280 at LooknListen new : http://www.lookandlisten.co.za/view/56435/ .

The part about the Xbox having a bigger library of older games is correct and the Classic game collection is a bit cheaper than the PS3 platinum collection,
but as for new releases on both platforms, they cost the exact same.

I saw Gears2 a month ago at unincredible connection for R999.

That's because they're overcharging.

Still 25% more than the next model. I know plenty of people who rightly decided the extra 60Gb of drive space was not worth the extra R700.

Regarding game prices: I usually pay between R200 and R400 for PS3 games, Kalahari.net FTW :D
