The wif has given the all clear to buy an xbox for me birthday but was wondering if i should go for the elite or pro ?:D

I don't have an HDTV yet:( so will be playin on the old CRT for a while so please help me decide if i should get an elite or pro, decisions, decisions.

Finally are the new pro consoles with "Falcon" chipsets ? i assume the elite has the new chipsets. 65nm something that reduces the heating issue or something like that.

Thanks

Make sure you get the VGA cable and a female to female adaptor as well to play on a CRT.

The only known Falcon's out so far are the Halo Special Edition consoles with a lot number of 754 or higher.

I don't see the point of the Elite to be perfectly honest, it has a bigger HDD but what are you going to use it for? And it's black...

Personally I would recommend going for a premium/pro with the new HDMI ports. They are being spotted at Incredible Connection now. That way you get the latest hardware changes and a HDMI for when you buy the obligatory HDTV. However a lot of people say that there is no difference between HDMI and component input?..

Does the Pro bundled with Halo at IC at R3799, is that HDMI ported too?

The HDMI enabled Pro's are a soft launch, which means I have no idea ;)

Seriously you just have to check the boxes, as the non-HDMI 360's are sold they are being replaced with HDMI enabled ones. Microsoft SA will still not confirm that they are in the country, big secret :D

hmmm ... perhaps why there are bundles at the moment? I heard Look & Listen have something going for 3999 for the Pro / Halo / 2 x controllers.

Not all HDMI consoles have "HDMI" written on the box, you can actually check using the product number.

I'd get the Halo Special Edition One. Why?
1) It's a Pro with HDMI
2) It looks much nicer than the Elite (Ok, personal opinion).
3) It includes Halo which you probably want anyhow.
4) It's 4k, so price is midway between Pro and Elite.
5) you really don't need the bigger hard drive (When / If MS support Divx / Xvid, this may change).

Woh, The Special Edition Halo 360 does NOT include Halo 3.

There is a Pro bundle that includes Halo, either Pro+Halo @ R3799, or better yet Pro+Wireless Controller+Halo = R4000.

I'd say the Pro's are generally better value bundles at the moment.

I don't really see the point of the Elite unless you live in a country where live is officially launched (and hence you need the space to store downloaded movies and such). As for the HDMI, I have an LCD HDTV and use the component input, and it looks great to me.

It really comes down to budget - if you can afford the Elite and really, really want a black Xbox, then by all means buy it. If not, the Pro if absolutely sufficient, plus you will have extra cash for must-have games (and there are many).

As long as you have a SCART connection on your current CRT TV the Pro will come with everything you need (I don't know what's in the Elite box, assuming at least a component and HDMI cable).

For the love of God, do not buy a Core. The hard drive alone will bring the price up to that of a Pro.

It doesn't? I thought so initially, but then I saw one at Budget with a Halo box taped to it, so I assumed I was wrong. Well thats just dumbass. How can you have a Halo3 special edition that excludes Halo? The I'd say yeah, Get a Pro, but find an HDMI one if you can.

For me HDMI is a nice to have, but the main thing is it means you are sure you are getting the latest hardware build with new heatsinks etc. Also it's the same price so why buy something with less features you may want one day?

Amen to that.

Agreed, but the HDMI is not reason to buy an Elite - if you can find a Pro with HDMI, then obviously take that over the older models, even if just for the reliability factor.

During RAGE BT Games had a special were you could buy the Halo 3 console WITH the game bundled. I am not sure if all such bundles have sold out, perhaps inquire with the Northgate branch?

There is a "Halo Bundle" that has picture of Master Chief on the front of the box - that's not the special edition console, that's the bundle. The SE box, the whole thing is near black.

If budget is a concern, agreed don't get the core, wait for the arcade, it looks to finally be an entry level unit that's worth it, ie you don't need to buy anything else for it to be functional.

Thanks ppl for all the feedback. I think i will go for the PRO system. Will definitely check that it comes with a cable i can hook up to my CRT.
i think musica has a bundle for a pro with extra wireless controller & 1 game for R3999.00.

I really hope the special is still on as i don't see it on their website anymore:(

The specials a pretty standard thing - I saw 3x the Pro+Halo+controller @ R4k at the Musica DVD store in Canal walk, the one downstairs by CNA and Fego this weekend.
